Sophie Habboo is upset after receiving criticism online for her parenting since her son, Ziggy, was born in December. People have been leaving negative comments about her as a mother.
Thirty-one-year-old Lucy Watson, known from the show Made In Chelsea, discussed the negative comments she’s faced since becoming a mother during an appearance on Olivia Attwood’s podcast, Olivia’s House.
Sophie blamed her husband, Jamie Laing, who was also on the show, accusing him of intentionally provoking their fans to cause drama.
After Jamie publicly praised his mother for hosting a wonderful Christmas so soon after the birth of his baby, Ziggy, she started receiving a lot of unkind and hateful messages.
Sophie admitted she’s faced judgment as a mother, adding that it’s made worse by her husband’s controversial and often inflammatory public behavior.
‘Why are you posting – look at my wife three weeks postpartum. And commenting on looks.’
Olivia asked if the fans were upset that he was complimenting her. Jamie confirmed that they were, and called it ridiculous.
Sophie was upset that people were criticizing her parenting, pointing out she had help with things like cooking and cleaning. She felt it was unfair, explaining she had simply prepared the Christmas table, which wasn’t a big deal.
Jamie jokingly asked if Sophie had been responsible for something. Sophie denied it, saying it was the cleaning person. Jamie then corrected her, reminding her that she herself had created a spectacularly decorated Christmas display.
Before Sophie chimed in: ‘No my parents cook, I did f**k all. I literally laid a table that is it.’
Olivia reassured her, saying she looked fantastic after recently having a baby and hosting the event. She added that the internet can be a strange place.
Sophie said: ‘What do you want, crying? Complaining? You’re going to get hate that way as well!’
Jamie asked Olivia if she receives negative messages online, and Olivia confirmed she does. She explained that people send her direct messages criticizing how she’s handled her breakup, even commenting on her photos and blaming them for the relationship ending.
It’s always the women who assume too much, never the men. They believe that if you open up even a little, they have the full picture. But really, I only reveal what I want them to see.
Sophie revealed a surprising reaction to their Disney+ show. She said many viewers messaged her, criticizing how she treats Jamie, and comparing it to mistreating a dog. Some even told her she should be thankful Jamie held her hand during her C-section.
‘Don’t worry about the fact I’m getting my stomach cut out! But he held my hand…’
Jamie received backlash from popular mothers on Instagram, often called ‘mumfluencers’, who said his Christmas post was thoughtless and created an unattainable standard for new moms.
Jamie shared on Instagram how impressed he was with his wife, who made Christmas feel magical just three weeks after having a baby.
He shared a heartwarming video of his wife, Sophie, happily posing next to their decorated Christmas table, writing: ‘This is what it looks like three weeks after having a baby – my wife still managed to make Christmas magical!’
However, many people online criticized the post, calling it insensitive and typical of social media, where people only share the highlights of their lives.
They wrote: ‘This is nice, but let’s avoid portraying new mothers as if they need to be ‘superwomen.’ It’s not realistic or healthy.’
I usually really enjoy your posts, but this one feels insensitive and might put unnecessary pressure on new moms. It’s not realistic for everyone, as not all mothers have the financial means, help, or support to achieve this.
I don’t think this is healthy or a genuine interaction. It seems focused on trying to make others happy rather than on real healing and building meaningful connections.
‘My first Xmas when I was 3 weeks PP I slept most the day.’
Some people wondered if the couple had hired caterers or other professionals to assist them.
They acknowledged her recovery was good but asked for honesty in her posts, suggesting she had hired help – both someone to manage her social media and a chef to do the cooking.
Okay, so I need to know – did family help with all the amazing stuff? It’s not about one-upping anyone, honestly, it’s just… some of us are dreaming of being able to create even a fraction of what you did! It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap, I admit, but mostly I just want you all to stay happy and healthy as you continue sharing Ziggy’s story. Seriously, sending so much love and good vibes!
People reminded new moms not to feel bad if their Christmases didn’t look as perfect as Jamie and Sophie’s seemed to be.
It’s okay if you’re still feeling really exhausted three weeks after giving birth. Your body has been through a lot, and you’re incredibly strong – you’ve got this!
‘This is super unrealistic and contributes to a problem that causes post-partum women to suffer.’;
This isn’t important right now, and focusing on it actually makes things worse.
Let her rest and enjoy time with her baby, and allow her to eat as much as she needs to properly nourish and care for her child, both physically and emotionally.
Many people quickly defended Jamie, pointing out that he was simply showing support for his wife, who is recovering remarkably well just three weeks after giving birth. They questioned why others were being so critical.
‘That does not take anything away from any other mother who’s not doing these things.’;
It’s wonderful to see you celebrating Jamie Laing! She’s doing incredibly well right now and truly deserves to feel appreciated. ‘Superwoman’ is the perfect description for her.
It seems like Jamie is simply expressing his love and support for his wife. It’s likely he didn’t intend to offend other new mothers, and we shouldn’t overthink it.
‘Wow, this is crazy Work! I hope she had plenty of support and help though.’
