Ted Lasso has become Apple TV+’s most popular show, and though fans are eagerly awaiting season four, the show is entering new territory that essentially signals the end of its original story. Premiering in 2020, Ted Lasso quickly resonated with viewers, but it always seemed planned as a relatively short-run series. The creators originally envisioned a three-season storyline, and they appear to be following that plan.
The conclusion of Ted Lasso season 3 felt like a natural ending, and most viewers didn’t anticipate the show would continue after telling a complete story. While the show’s creators remained intentionally unclear about its future, the announcement of season 4 was surprising. Though fans are excited to see Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and AFC Richmond return, the upcoming season will ultimately mark the end of the beloved series, no matter what happens afterward.
Season four of Ted Lasso feels like a fresh start after following Ted and his team’s journey. Even though the show tried to tie up loose ends at the end of season three, blending new storylines with returning characters could create unexpected challenges for the show’s structure and potentially surprise viewers.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Will Focus On A Whole New Team
The fourth season of Ted Lasso is a welcome surprise for fans of the show. However, things are set to change significantly this season, more so than in previous seasons. For the first time, the show will focus on a women’s football team, as Ted Lasso begins coaching Rebecca Welton’s (Hannah Waddingham) new team. While Ted will undoubtedly encounter difficulties, they will be quite different from the challenges seen before.
It’s been a while since the events of Ted Lasso, and we’re not sure exactly when or how the story will pick up again. Ted, who returned to the US after season 3, might be starting over completely, or he could return to AFC Richmond to help a friend. Either way, if Ted is coaching a different team, the focus will shift away from the original AFC Richmond players, introducing us to new characters and storylines.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Won’t Feature A Fan Favorite Cast Member
Now that the men’s team isn’t central to the story anymore, AFC Richmond’s players won’t be major characters in the upcoming season of Ted Lasso. While fans might still see some familiar faces like Sam Obisanya and Dani Rojas, Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie Tartt, won’t be returning for season four.
Throughout the first three seasons of Ted Lasso, Jamie Tartt underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a gifted but self-destructive player into someone more aware of his emotions and better able to control them. While his character arc felt complete after season 3, it’s disappointing that we won’t see what happens with him in season 4. Phil Dunster’s departure also means the show is losing a key cast member for the first time, which could disrupt the series, especially considering how central his character was to many past storylines.
Ted Lasso Season 4 May Struggle Combining New Storylines With Unfinished Ones
Okay, so heading into season four of Ted Lasso, we’re definitely going to meet some new faces. But don’t worry, the folks we already love – Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift – are coming back with their stories feeling pretty complete after the season three finale. It’s a bit more complicated for Juno Temple (Keeley Jones) and Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), though; their characters have some things that still need to be resolved before we can fully dive back in.
Though Roy and Keeley ended season 3 of Ted Lasso in a good place, their relationship still had some loose ends. It seems the next season will address these, and explore how their story fits with the new focus on the women’s AFC Richmond team. Combining these storylines might be tricky, as they may not flow together as smoothly as previous seasons.
Roy and Keeley’s connection felt genuine in earlier seasons, but introducing too many new storylines could make their relationship seem repetitive or lose its spark as Ted Lasso evolves.
Ted Lasso’s Underdog Optimism May Feel Out Of Place In Season 4
Many viewers have found the most memorable aspect of Ted Lasso to be its unwavering optimism. Even when dealing with difficult topics and heartbreaking moments, the show maintains a positive and uplifting energy that encourages viewers to focus on the good. However, a lot has changed in the real world since the third season of Ted Lasso ended in 2023.
While Ted Lasso‘s relentlessly positive attitude is arguably what many people need right now, the show’s story of an underdog overcoming obstacles might not resonate as strongly with audiences in 2026. After three seasons – which felt like a long time – Ted’s cheerful determination and ability to find the good in everything may not have the same impact the creators are hoping for. Fortunately, the team behind Ted Lasso continues to collaborate on other projects, giving them insight into how to move forward, but it’s possible that Ted’s optimism will feel out of touch with current realities.
Even though Ted Lasso brought several storylines to a close in its fourth season, the show’s future could be its strongest installment so far.
