Rita Wilson has openly shared how deeply affected she was by her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2015.
Rita Wilson, 69, underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery as part of her cancer treatment. She took a month-long break from her role in the Broadway play Fish in the Dark to have the procedures done.
I was so moved hearing her talk about facing her health scare. She recently shared her experience with her dear friend Demi Moore during a really intimate conversation at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. It was powerful to hear her reflect on everything she’s been through.
She told her husband she’d been thinking about her illness getting worse, and she discussed how she hoped he would cope if she didn’t get better.
Wilson recalled telling Tom, “If something were to happen to me, I have just two requests. First, I want you to be sad for a very long time.”
I also want to have a celebration of my life – a party where people can share stories, remember the good times, and just enjoy themselves. I think a lot of people would appreciate that, and I believe there’s definitely a place for that kind of event.
She revealed that her 2019 song, ‘Throw Me a Party,’ came from her experience with cancer. During that difficult time, she often wondered if she would recover and hoped to still be around in the future, thinking, ‘I really don’t know what’s going to happen, but I hope I’m here in a few years.’
Last March, she marked a decade of being cancer-free on Instagram, expressing her thanks to everyone who supported her during her illness.
She expressed immense gratitude to her doctors, friends, and family, saying she hadn’t always felt this thankful.
She noted that people dealing with cancer know it’s a challenging journey with good days and bad, but they also believe there’s a point where things start to improve.
As Wilson battled her illness, Hanks stepped up to defend her, strongly criticizing doctors who attempted to profit from her situation.
Unfortunately, some people prey on those recently diagnosed with serious illnesses like cancer, attempting to profit from their vulnerability. They might promote unproven or questionable treatments, ranging from procedures with limited scientific backing to outright scams, all in pursuit of financial gain, he explained to news.com.au.
Wilson emphasized that her first medical test didn’t detect the cancer, and it wasn’t until she got a second opinion that the diagnosis was confirmed.
She’s on the mend and doctors expect a complete recovery, which she attributes to early detection, great medical care, and seeking a second opinion, she told People magazine.
The Los Angeles resident also expressed hope that their experience would empower others to seek another perspective and listen to their gut feelings when something seems off.
She said her husband was a constant support during her surgeries, and she was grateful for the love and care she received from both him and her doctors.
Wilson and Hanks got married in 1988 and later had two sons: Chet, who is now 35, and Truman, age 30.
You know, I’ve always believed strong relationships are the key to a happy life, and Tom Hanks really nailed it when he talked about his wife, Rita Wilson, with Oprah years ago. He described her as his best friend and his lover, and said that connection has been there from the start. He shared that they still laugh together like they always have – even at 2 AM! – and amazingly, they’ve actually learned to argue less over time. It’s a beautiful reminder that lasting love is built on friendship, shared joy, and a willingness to grow together.
He realized our relationship worked because we met at the right time, were both ready for something serious, and weren’t afraid to be close to each other.
Tom Hanks remembers thinking when he married Rita Wilson that he would need to adapt and change. While he believes fate brought them together, he emphasizes their relationship isn’t like the idealized, effortless love stories often seen in films – it takes work.
He pointed out that their relationship felt very real and tangible, like being physically present with each other. While marriage could be incredibly difficult at times, they both knew they would always be there for each other and overcome any challenges together.
