Many sci-fi shows focus on realism, scientific accuracy, and the complex effects of technology. From popular anime to hidden live-action treasures, they explore themes of space travel, artificial intelligence, and human vulnerability, often going even deeper than mainstream series. This approach creates shows that feel bolder, more believable, and more enjoyable. While The Expanse is often seen as the face of popular sci-fi, these 10 shows prove that truly thoughtful, ‘hard’ sci-fi is actually doing very well.

As a big fan of the show, I’ve learned that with The Pitt, no one is ever really secure – and it’s not just dramatic license! Because it’s a teaching hospital, characters are always moving on, whether it’s to a new facility or to specialize somewhere else. We’ve already seen this happen a couple of times. Tracy Ifeachor’s Dr. Heather Collins left to pursue a fellowship out of state, and now, after season two, Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan is also leaving The Pitt. It definitely keeps things interesting, but it’s always sad to see good doctors go!

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws remains one of the most terrifying horror films ever made, and no shark movie since has quite reached its level of fear. However, that hasn’t stopped filmmakers from continuing to make shark movies. While films like The Shallows and Open Water are known for being genuinely suspenseful, a separate trend of lighthearted, even silly, shark movies has also emerged.

The 2000 Syfy miniseries adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune is surprisingly strong, and in some ways, an improvement over previous attempts. Because it had more time, the miniseries was able to delve into characters and ideas that the films largely ignored. The same holds true for its sequel, which could potentially be as good as or better than the upcoming adaptation of Dune Messiah.
