The Devil Wears Prada 2 cast guide: Who’s back, who’s new and who’s missing?

Get ready to revisit the world of The Devil Wears Prada! The sequel brings back beloved characters from the original 2006 film, and it won’t feel like a moment has passed when Miranda Priestly starts delivering her signature, cutting remarks.

Okay, so the team behind the first movie pretty much came back for this one! David Frankel directed again, and Aline Brosh McKenna wrote the script. Plus, a lot of the same people worked on it behind the scenes – like the production designer, the cinematographer, and Molly Rogers, who did the costumes. She was actually an associate costume designer on the first film, so it was cool to see her take on a bigger role this time around.

Let’s talk about the actors! Here’s a complete guide to the cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2, including who’s returning, who’s joining, and who won’t be in the sequel.

Who’s back in The Devil Wears Prada 2?

A sequel to The Devil Wears Prada wouldn’t be complete without the original main cast: Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling.

In the sequel, Miranda remains the powerful editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, with Nigel still by her side as creative director. However, both Andy and Emily have experienced significant changes. Andy has become a successful, award-winning journalist, but a sudden life event brings her back to Runway – this time as a features editor. Meanwhile, Emily has moved on completely, now working as the chief communications officer at Dior.

Runway remains under the ownership of Elias-Clarke, and Tibor Feldman is back as their chairman, Irv Ravitz. Meanwhile, Andy continues to rely on her friend Lily for support, with Tracie Thoms returning to play the role she originated in the first film.

Who’s new in The Devil Wears Prada 2?

Okay, so Emily and Andy are gone, and Miranda’s got new assistants. Honestly, I’m guessing she’s gone through a ton over the last 20 years! This time around, Simone Ashley is playing Amari, her main assistant, and Caleb Hearon is Charlie, who’s the second one. It’s gonna be interesting to see how these two handle her!

Andy now has her own assistant, Helen J Shen, who plays the character Jin Chao. This casting choice has caused some discussion before the official release.

Although Justin Theroux and Lucy Liu, who play Benji and Sasha Barnes, haven’t appeared much in the movie’s trailers, their characters are central to the story. Without giving away any spoilers, it’s safe to say Theroux delivers a performance unlike anything he’s done before as Benji.

In the romance department, Kenneth Branagh plays Stuart, Miranda’s new husband, and Patrick Brammall – known for his role in the popular show Colin from Accounts – appears as Andy’s new boyfriend, Peter.

Joining the cast of the Devil Wears Prada world are several new faces, including BJ Novak as Jay Ravitz, the son of Irv and a high-ranking executive at Elias-Clarke. Rachel Bloom plays Andy’s friend Tessa, and in a fun surprise, Lady Gaga appears as herself.

Which characters are missing from The Devil Wears Prada 2?

Honestly, a lot of the actors who didn’t return for the sequel weren’t a huge shock, but I was kinda hoping to at least see Adrian Grenier pop up as Nate, Andy’s ex. It’s weird, because since the first movie came out, fans seem to really dislike his character, but I still thought a little cameo would’ve been cool.

Nate isn’t in The Devil Wears Prada 2, but director David Frankel considered a quick appearance for him. He told EW that the idea came up too late in the filming process to actually include it.

Ultimately, we’re left with the funny Starbucks commercial featuring Grenier as a way to acknowledge he won’t be in the next movie.

Besides Nate, several characters from the original movie don’t appear in the sequel. These include Andy’s father, Richard (played by David Marshall Grant), reporter Christian Thompson (played by Simon Baker), and Andy’s friend, Doug (played by Rich Sommer).

The upcoming film won’t feature Jocelyn (Rebecca Mader), Lucia (Jimena Hoyos), or Serena (Gisele Bündchen), the characters who worked at Runway. Hopefully, they’ve moved on to successful careers in journalism.
