Britney Spears has officially been charged with DUI nearly two months after being arrested.
The Daily Mail has published documents showing that the 44-year-old pop star, arrested on March 4th, will be formally charged with crimes.
Ventura County prosecutors have charged Spears with one count of misdemeanor DUI.
According to The Daily Mail, the pop star was arrested by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 PM on Wednesday, March 4th, in Ventura County, following multiple 911 calls.
Ventura County Sheriff’s records show the singer, who was recently observed driving recklessly, was released the next day.
Britney Spears’ representatives have responded to her recent arrest, calling the incident ‘completely inexcusable.’ They stated that Britney will fully cooperate with the law and hope this marks a turning point, leading to the help and support she needs to address ongoing issues in her life.
Her sons will be visiting, and her family and friends are finally making a plan to help her live a healthier and happier life.
Her car was towed and impounded by Roy’s Towing in Thousand Oaks, California.
According to TMZ, Britney Spears reportedly became very upset and was crying while being booked at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, suggesting she immediately regretted her actions.
When a person gets a DUI in California, their driver’s license is automatically suspended.
You could also face jail time, a fine exceeding $1,000, and required DUI classes.
For a first-time DUI offense, you can usually expect three to five years of probation, a six-month driver’s license suspension, and around six months of DUI education classes.
In February, Britney Spears was seen driving her Mercedes SUV and seemingly using her cell phone while doing so, which is against the law.
On February 12th, she was seen driving in Los Angeles and seemingly talking on her phone, which is against California law. The state’s ‘No Touch’ law (Vehicle Code 23123.5) prohibits drivers from using handheld cell phones while operating a vehicle.
She was not charged in relation to the incident.
This wasn’t the first concerning incident for Britney Spears. Recently, she was caught on video driving erratically, briefly crossing into the wrong lane after an evening out. At the time, people close to her worried she was struggling, especially following the release of her ex-husband Kevin Federline’s memoir. Spears and Federline were married from 2004 to 2007.
In 2007, she was cited for a minor hit-and-run after accidentally hitting a parked car. Reports from the time said the case was dropped after she paid the car owner an undisclosed amount of money.
In 2008, she received a ticket for driving without a valid California license, but the judge later dropped the charge.
In 2023, police went to Britney Spears’s house after a video surfaced showing knives, but no one was charged with any crime.
Spears has had very public personal struggles for nearly two decades.
In 2007, the celebrity experienced a very difficult emotional collapse following months of concerning public behavior, ultimately leading to a period of psychiatric care.
Fans grew worried when the pop star, then 25 years old, shaved her head and damaged a photographer’s car with an umbrella. She soon after entered a rehabilitation facility.
Britney Spears faced another challenge following a poorly received performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. Her rendition of “Gimme More” was widely criticized by viewers and professional critics.
In January 2008, she was confined to a facility after she wouldn’t let her ex-husband, Federline, take their young son.
