Prime Video’s New 8-Part Adaptation Of 44-Year-Old Supernatural Novel Launches As Global Streaming Success

Prime Video’s new adaptation of a 44-year-old supernatural novel makes a spirited debut.

Many popular shows on Prime Video are adapted from books, such as Reacher (based on Lee Child’s thrillers), The Rings of Power (inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings), The Wheel of Time (from Robert Jordan’s fantasy novels), Daisy Jones & The Six (inspired by Taylor Jenkins Reid’s book), and The Summer I Turned Pretty (based on Jenny Han’s book series). Now, Prime Video is generating excitement with a new version of a classic supernatural story.

Just one day after its debut, The House of the Spirits is proving to be a hit with viewers around the world. This Prime Video series, adapted from Isabel Allende’s 1982 novel, tells the story of a Latin American family across 100 years. It explores secret love affairs, political upheaval, and the complex relationships between family members – particularly a strong-willed grandfather and his granddaughter – set against a backdrop of Chile’s changing times.

As of today, April 30th, The House of the Spirits is the sixth most popular TV show on Prime Video worldwide. It premiered with three episodes on April 29th and currently ranks below The Boys, Invincible, Young Sherlock, Scarpetta, and Yo soy Betty la fea, but above shows like Fallout, Las de siempre, Matka King, and House of David.

Currently, the series The House of the Spirits is a Top 10 hit on Prime Video in 19 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Honduras, Italy, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, El Salvador, Spain, and Uruguay. While it’s not in the Top 10 list, you can still watch The House of the Spirits on Prime Video in the United States.

The show features a talented cast including Alfonso Herrera, Nicole Wallace, Dolores Fonzi, Fernanda Castillo, Aline Kupenheim, Eduard Fernández, Sara Becker, Fernanda Urrejola, Rocío Hernández, Juan Pablo Raba, Pablo Macaya, and Nicolás Francella. It was produced by Eva Longoria.

Prime Video’s House of Spirits is generally well-received, earning an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise its beautiful visuals, ambitious scope, and emotional impact. While the series stays true to the original novel, some reviewers found it to be a bit slow-paced, inconsistent, and occasionally harsh, though most viewers ultimately find it worthwhile. Currently, there aren’t enough user ratings available to calculate an audience score.

New episodes of The House of the Spirits (originally titled La Casa de los Espíritus) will be released every Wednesday, with the final episode airing on May 13th.
