Netflix has created many memorable characters in its original shows and movies, like those in Stranger Things and BoJack Horseman. While it doesn’t have the same consistent brand image as Disney or HBO, Netflix has released a large number of excellent films and TV series featuring characters people genuinely connect with.
I wrestled with defining what exactly makes a character a ‘Netflix character’ while making this list. It felt wrong to include someone like Wednesday Addams, who’s been popular for years, but I did include Lara Jean Song-Covey, even though she originally came from a book. It’s a bit of a gray area, so it might seem inconsistent at times.
20. Rumi
When KPop Demon Hunters debuted on Netflix, it quickly became a major cultural hit. The film has since become one of Netflix’s most recognizable titles, and Rumi is the star most associated with it.
The lead singer of Huntrix, a powerful swordswoman, is a unique figure – she’s both demon and demon hunter, making her a truly formidable character. The story centers around her internal struggle with her demonic heritage and her worry that this secret will be revealed.
19. Frank Murphy
Frank Murphy is a familiar type of flawed father – think Archie Bunker or Homer Simpson – but Bill Burr’s distinctive comedic style and delivery really make the character his own. Burr’s ability to express intense frustration through humor is a perfect fit for this role.
You know, I really got into F is for Family because it wasn’t just about shocking humor based on how parents used to behave back in the 70s. It actually made me think about why things changed, and I appreciated that Frank, the main character, wasn’t just stuck in his ways – he genuinely tried to improve himself. It added a surprising layer to the comedy.
18. Cho Sang-woo
Sang-woo experienced one of the most compelling character developments in Squid Game. While he initially seemed questionable morally, there was more to him than met the eye.
To reach the final round of the game, he made difficult choices and did terrible things. However, his ultimate sacrifice showed a glimpse of the compassionate person he once was, changing how we saw him.
17. Nanette Cole
When Black Mirror moved from Channel 4 to Netflix, creator Charlie Brooker was able to produce larger-scale, more complex episodes, such as “USS Callister.” This particular episode cleverly pays tribute to classic Star Trek while also offering a disturbing portrayal of a lonely, resentful man with technological skills.
The episode centers around Nanette Cole, portrayed by Cristin Milioti, and her incredible transformation. Like Sarah Connor, Nanette evolves from an ordinary person into a strong, capable fighter.
16. Maurice The Hormone Monster
What really set Big Mouth apart was how it used creative imagery and symbolism to openly talk about the awkward and often difficult topics of puberty and sex. The best example of this willingness to tackle taboo subjects is Maurice the Hormone Monster.
He perfectly captures the embarrassment, worry, and discomfort of being a teenager. He represents all the negative and unwanted thoughts that are troubling Nick’s mind.
15. Special Agent Holden Ford
The series Mindhunter follows three FBI agents as they try to understand what motivates serial killers by looking for patterns in their behavior. The show also explores the psychological impact this work has on the agents themselves.
Each of the three main characters copes with the emotional stress in their own way, and it’s compelling to see. However, Jonathan Groff’s portrayal of Holden Ford—a relatable FBI profiler who battles panic attacks—is what truly carries the show.
14. Eleanor “Nell” Crane
Nell is undoubtedly the most tragic figure in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. Her past is incredibly sad, she carries a tremendous amount of emotional pain, and ultimately, she meets a particularly devastating end.
The strongest episode of the show is also the one that focuses most on Nell. It really showcases Mike Flanagan’s talent for combining spooky, supernatural elements with deeply emotional human stories, and using the horror to make those feelings even more powerful.
13. Frank Sheeran
It’s highly unlikely that the events depicted in The Irishman actually happened. While the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa remains a mystery, evidence suggests he wasn’t killed by the character played by Robert De Niro in the film.
However, that doesn’t diminish how good The Irishman is as a film. It’s a serious and thoughtful gangster movie by Martin Scorsese, focusing on the lasting regret of a hitman.
12. Beth Harmon
Scott Frank achieved something remarkable with The Queen’s Gambit, making the game of chess surprisingly exciting to watch. Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance as the brilliant chess player Beth Harmon propelled her to fame, and it’s clear why – she’s captivating on screen.
Taylor-Joy brilliantly portrayed the contrast within Beth Harmon. She appeared poised and focused while playing chess, yet was deeply troubled and struggling with her personal life.
11. Frank Underwood
It’s hard to discuss House of Cards these days because of the serious allegations against Kevin Spacey, which have overshadowed the series. However, the show was incredibly important for Netflix, helping to establish it as a major player, and Frank Underwood remains a compelling and fascinating character.
The show House of Cards really declined in quality after the character of Frank Underwood was removed. He was a fascinating and compelling antihero, and the series lost its direction without him.
