UK Netflix viewers, don’t wait! The award-winning film Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone, is leaving the service in a few weeks. Known for its unique style of appearing as a single, continuous shot, now’s your last chance to watch or re-watch this acclaimed satirical drama.
I first saw Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) when it came out in 2014, and it really stuck with me. It’s about an older actor, Riggan Thomson – played brilliantly by Michael Keaton – who’s trying to regain relevance. He’s haunted by visions of the superhero character, Birdman, that he famously played years ago in a big movie series. It’s a really interesting story about a guy battling his past!
The film Birdman is leaving Netflix on May 18th, as indicated by a ‘Leaving Soon’ notice. However, you can still watch it on Prime Video and Disney+.

The film, written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu alongside Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Armando Bó, is largely set in a Broadway theater. It centers around Riggan Thomson as he prepares his own stage version of Raymond Carver’s short story, ‘What We Talk About When We Talk About Love’.
As chaos unfolds during the fast-paced production, Riggan’s struggle with his inner demons—represented by the character Birdman—comes to a climax, resulting in a dramatic opening night.
What to Read Next
I’ve heard Emma Stone plays Riggan’s daughter, Sam, and she’s going through a really tough time with addiction. Their relationship is super complicated, which makes the movie interesting. And Edward Norton is Mike Shiner – apparently, he’s a total pain as this super intense, method actor type.
Andrea Riseborough plays Laura, Riggan’s girlfriend and a fellow actor in the play. Naomi Watts is Riggan’s ex-wife, Lesley, and Zach Galifianakis plays Jake, his best friend and lawyer.

The film Birdman received nine Academy Award nominations and won four: Best Picture, Best Director for Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography, awarded to Emmanuel Lubezki, a frequent collaborator of Iñárritu.
Currently, this is Stone’s third-highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating with a 91% score based on over 350 critic reviews. The film, directed by Iñárritu, has been widely praised as a creative success and a captivating exploration of the main character’s inner turmoil. Variety called it “a triumph on every creative level,” while Film Comment Magazine described it as an “extraordinary” and immersive experience.
You can watch Birdman on Netflix until May 18th. If you’re in the UK, it’s also available on Prime Video and Disney+.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant, full-colour 100-page tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
