The “D” Is Silent, But the Blade Is Sharp: Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django/Zorro’ Film Crossover Is Officially in Development

Summary

  • Sony Pictures is officially developing a crossover film based on the comic series co-written by Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner
  • Brian Helgeland has been tapped to write the script for the unexpected cinematic pairing
  • While Tarantino will not step into the director’s chair, the project has received his official blessing to move forward

After years of speculation and a previous attempt that didn’t move forward in 2019, a continuation of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is officially happening. Sony Pictures is developing a movie based on the Django/Zorro comic book series, which was originally created by Tarantino and artist Matt Wagner.

The studio has brought on Brian Helgeland, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter known for his work on films like L.A. Confidential and Mystic River, to write the screenplay. His participation suggests they’re committed to crafting a realistic and compelling story from what could have been a sensationalized plot.

Looking at the bigger picture, this film marks an interesting turn in Quentin Tarantino’s career. He’s well-known for saying he’ll make only ten films, and he recently decided not to direct his planned tenth movie, The Movie Critic. By letting Taylor Helgeland write the script for Django/Zorro and choosing not to direct it himself, Tarantino stays true to his ten-film limit while still allowing his previous stories to grow. The film will bring together the popular bounty hunter from the 2012 hit Django Unchained with the iconic Zorro, connecting two different time periods of historical adventure.

Since the director, release date, and cast haven’t been revealed yet, the current priority is for Helgeland to develop the initial plan for this unique movie collaboration.

Stay tuned for an official trailer and release date.
