The sci-fi drama originally aired on NBC for three seasons and concluded in 2024. Now, after a two-year break, all three seasons will be available on Netflix, giving the show a chance to reach a wider audience.
The full series of La Brea will be available to stream on Netflix starting May 1st. Before the premiere of its third season, NBC announced the show would end after just six episodes. The first season, with 10 episodes, performed well, earning a 14-episode second season. However, the third season was impacted by the writers’ and actors’ strikes, causing the network to shorten it and allow the cast to pursue other opportunities.
La Brea Transports Modern Day Californians to 10,000 BC
The show starts with a huge sinkhole appearing in Los Angeles, right in the middle of the La Brea Tar Pits. People and buildings fall into it, and those who survive find themselves transported back to a prehistoric world around 10,000 BC. They have to learn to survive against dangerous animals and scarce resources while trying to understand where โ and when โ they are, and hoping to find a way back to their own time. As the story unfolds, it introduces more science fiction elements, including secret experiments and organizations, and explores the mystery behind how this all happened.
David Appelbaum was the creator and executive producer of the series, which stars Natalie Zea (known from Passions), Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), Chike Okonkwo (Being Mary Jane), Jack Martin (Pizza Movie), Veronica St. Clair (FBI: International), Lily Santiago (Untamed), Michelle Vergara Moore (The Unusual Suspects), Josh McKenzie (The Hunting Party), Nicholas Gonzalez (The Good Doctor), Tonantzin Carmelo (Into the West), and Ione Skye (Arrested Development).
Ending the Series Was Bittersweet
Ending the show after three seasons is a mix of happy and sad, according to Appelbaum. She described the past four and a half years working on the series as an incredible experience, filled with hard work and challenges. While it’s tough to say goodbye to something she loves, she’s proud of the way the story concludes and believes the finale will be emotionally satisfying for viewers who have connected with the characters.
Netflix is adding more shows and series in May. The new season of La Brea will be available soon, and a brand new series called The Rhythm of Revenge (a Thai drama) starts on May 4th with new episodes released each week. On May 7th, look for the premiere of Legends, a British crime drama, and the second season of the Nordic crime series The Chestnut Man.
La Brea will start streaming on Netflix on May 1, 2026.
