James Gunn Confirms Long-Theorized Fate Of The DCU’s R-Rated Team-Up Movie 3 Years Later

James Gunn has finally revealed whether an R-rated team-up movie will happen in the DC Universe, three years after the idea was first discussed.

In 2023, James Gunn revealed the initial lineup for the DC Universe, dubbed “Gods and Monsters.” This included the releases of Superman, season one of Creature Commandos, and season two of Peacemaker, with Supergirl also planned. However, several other announced projects haven’t shown much development over the past three years, leading many to believe they may have been canceled.

James Gunn has confirmed that the movie The Authority is no longer in development. In a post on Threads, Gunn clarified he was never going to direct or write the film, despite what some fans speculated. He explained the decision was due to problems with the script, difficulty integrating the movie into the broader DC Universe, and some logistical challenges. However, he left the door open to the possibility of the project being revisited in the future. You can find Gunn’s complete statement below.

That was just a mistake – I misspoke. I definitely didn’t have the time to work on ‘The Authority,’ and despite what some fans online think, I never planned to write or direct it. The script wasn’t strong enough, and more importantly, it didn’t fit with the overall DC Universe, either story-wise or logistically. Perhaps it could happen someday, but not anytime soon.

The Authority is a DC Comics team known for its complex, often morally gray heroes. Notable members have included characters like Jenny Sparks, The Engineer, Midnighter, and Apollo. Maria Gabriela de Faría played The Engineer in the recent Superman movie, where she was shown working alongside Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). This initially suggested a future film focused on The Authority, but those plans have since been cancelled.

James Gunn also used the comments section of the same Threads post to update fans on two other DC projects announced last year: the Booster Gold TV series and Paradise Lost. He said Booster Gold is still being developed, while Paradise Lost is in very early stages of development. Paradise Lost will tell the story of Themyscira and the Amazons, before Wonder Woman’s time.

The DC Universe’s plans have evolved a lot since they were first announced three years ago, but James Gunn has repeatedly said that every project needs a great script before it’s approved. That’s why the Clayface movie is coming out this October – everyone loved Mike Flanagan’s script. Other projects are taking longer to develop, and some, like The Authority, have been put on hold for now.

Even though the planned The Authority project isn’t happening right now, there will likely be other chances for The Engineer and the rest of the team to show up in the DC Universe. James Gunn has stated that while Peacemaker won’t get a third season, Christopher Smith’s story will continue in different ways. This same approach could be used for The Authority – they might appear in future projects even if they aren’t the main characters or the focus of the story.

The previously planned R-rated The Authority movie isn’t moving forward, but the DC Universe isn’t avoiding mature content altogether. Clayface, for example, is intended to be a truly scary, R-rated horror film. The DCU will feature a variety of styles and tones, including hopeful stories like Superman alongside darker, more intense projects.
