Darius Rucker, best known as the frontman for Hootie & the Blowfish, generally avoids discussing his political views publicly. However, he has openly condemned racism, which is a natural and expected stance, as racism has no place in society.
Honestly, if you were hoping for a jam session between Rucker’s band and Public Enemy, people probably thought you were losing it! They seemed like totally different worlds, and a collaboration just didn’t make any sense.
Despite their past issues, they shared the stage at the Stagecoach Festival on April 26th, performing Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power.” The story behind this collaboration is interesting, and we might learn more about how it came together, but the performance itself was surprisingly good – definitely not something to dismiss.
Public Enemy and Hootie & the Blowfish team up for something great (as well as unexpected)
The performance was excellent. The band created a strong, driving rhythm that perfectly complemented Chuck D and Flavor Flav’s delivery of their impactful lyrics – lyrics that still resonate today and will continue to do so for years to come. Public Enemy has always understood the power of words, and that’s what their music is all about.
Interestingly, Hootie & the Blowfish’s first album, Cracked Rear View, and Public Enemy’s fifth album, Muse Sick-n-Our Mess Age, were both released in 1994, just weeks apart. However, the audiences for these two very different albums likely didn’t overlap much.
When people first heard these albums, it’s unlikely they imagined the two artists would still be performing together at a California festival over three decades later.
What’s really cool about this song, and honestly one of the things I love about music in general, is how well these two totally different groups pull it off together. Some people think it’s a statement about something bigger, and maybe it is. It’s interesting because the song came out way back in 1989, and one band, Public Enemy, is from New York City, while the other, Hootie & the Blowfish, is from down South.
Honestly, the why these two groups teamed up doesn’t really matter to me – it’s that they did team up. The best collaborations aren’t just about making money, and that performance of “Fight the Power” totally proved it. They were trying to get a message across, and they nailed it – it was pure magic to watch.
