Sex Pistols Announce Australian Tour Without Johnny Rotten: Fans React!

Approximately three decades have passed, yet the iconic British punk band, The Sex Pistols, is making a comeback to Australian waters. However, there’s a significant absence – one original member won’t be joining this time around.

The band behind the iconic “God Save The Queen” is preparing to travel to Australia for a series of five performances, during which they will perform their groundbreaking 1977 album, “Never Mind The Bullocks, Here Come The Sex Pistols,” from start to finish.

Instead, it’s important to note that John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten, won’t be performing. In his place is Frank Carter, who will handle the aggressive vocal parts.

Without being a newcomer on the stage, Carter embarked on his music journey as the lead vocalist for the British hardcore group Gallows, also known for his work with Pure Love and Frank Carter and the Snakeskin band.

For a special delight for the audience, the classic lineup of the band, featuring Paul Cook, Steve Jones, and Glen Matlock, will join in.

Matlock departed the Sex Pistols in 1977 to make way for infamous bass player Sid Vicious.

On a Friday, Live Nation shared on Instagram that the band is set to commence their tour at Melbourne’s Festival Hall on April 5th, followed by a performance at the Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide the next day.

Moving forward, I’m bound for the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on the 8th of April, followed by a stop at Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane on the 9th.

The tour will conclude in Western Australia with a show at Fremantle Prison on April 11.

The announcement of their tour was greeted with Australian audience’s approval, even though the iconic vocalist, Lydon, was absent from the lineup.

‘This is huge @frankcarter23,’ one fan commented. ‘Amazed and proud! Congrats!’

Another chimed in with a similar: ‘Epic! Can’t wait for Sydney.’

There is certainly no love lost between the Sex Pistols and their former frontman, Lydon.

Following their reunion for a series of concerts across the UK in 2024, guitarist Steve Jones disclosed that he hadn’t exchanged words with frontman Lydon in 16 long years.

On the Rockonteurs podcast, he mentioned that it’s been years since they last talked, and their last conversation was back in 2008. During that period, they performed approximately 30 shows together across various cities in Europe.

We attended several festivals and various other events… eventually winding up at Hammersmith Odeon, which is now known as Hammersmith Apollo. Following that, we performed one final show in the Basque Country, marking the end of our tour.

The musician confessed, “I had had enough after that point; I couldn’t do any more. It was just too much, feeling old and unaccomplished.

Since their separation in 1978, Lydon has consistently disagreed with the band over the use of their music in television programs, attempting to prevent it from being utilized.

In 2022, a Danny Boyle-led six-episode series chronicling the ascent and descent of the trailblazers of punk music was made available on Disney+, reviving the conflict between John and his ex-band members.

John, despite not being part of the show’s creation process, voiced strong criticisms towards the project, pointing out what he believed to be its inexact portrayals of history.

However, Steve countered John’s comments by telling him to “mature and let it go,” since he couldn’t comprehend why John was so emotional over the TV show.

He maintained that the series centers around him, rather than John, since it’s derived from his memoir titled “Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistol.

‘I ain’t got time for all that c**p any more,’ Steve told The Sun at the time.

It’s time for you to mature and let go. This story isn’t just about John; I am its main focus, despite his significant role.

Steve and Paul found themselves embroiled in a recent legal dispute with John, aiming to prevent the inclusion of their music in the television show.

Following their legal dispute, John labeled his previous bandmates as ‘greedy’, ‘unpleasant’, and ‘malicious’. Later, he asserted that this case had a detrimental financial impact on him, effectively bankrupting him.

The Sex Pistols were formed in 1975 as one of the first British punk groups, but disbanded in 1978.

They did numerous live concerts together, including the Filthy Lucre tour in 1996, as well as performances in 2002, 2003, and 2007, culminating with the Azkena Rock Festival in 2008.
