Star Trek should consider handing the reigns to one iconic behind the scenes figure

As a die-hard Star Trek fan who’s witnessed the galaxy’s greatest adventures since the days of Captain Kirk, I can’t help but feel a tinge of excitement at the prospect of Ronald D. Moore returning to the helm. With his exceptional writing skills and unparalleled understanding of the Star Trek universe, he could very well be the savior our beloved series needs.

The ownership of Star Trek will shift following the completion of the merger with Skydance, which may lead to significant changes in staffing across all levels. This could pave the way for fresh leadership to take charge of future projects, films, and series, potentially giving Star Trek a brand-new direction.

In simpler terms, it’s uncertain if that will occur. It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely given the fluctuating popularity of Star Trek at present. Even though David Ellison, owner of Skydance, has worked with the Star Trek crew in the past, it doesn’t guarantee they’ll continue with the brand.

Given the escalating expenses and waning enthusiasm among viewers, Paramount+ has decided to prioritize only a handful of Star Trek series, leaving the majority on hold. This strategic shift involves concentrating on one or two series at a given time, while also creating more affordable movies in the pipeline.

Over the last seven-plus years, Star Trek has experienced varying levels of success, suggesting that a fresh perspective at the helm might be beneficial. A potential candidate for this role could be an established figure from the past, yet one who still possesses youthful energy. Although someone like Jonathan Frakes might be considered too seasoned to shoulder the franchise’s future for the next decade, we believe a more youthful individual could successfully take on the task.

And it’s the one person who has as much clout and weight behind him with the Star Trek community as Frakes, or anyone else for that matter; Ronald D. Moore.

For those uninitiated in the fandom, Moore is frequently regarded as the most accomplished author to emerge from Star Trek. Later, he took charge of the highly successful reboot of Battlestar Galactica for Sci-Fi (formerly SyFy). The series was a massive success, and after his tenure with the Star Trek franchise and BSG added to his resume, Moore solidified his place in science fiction’s pantheon.

Currently, Star Trek is seeking fresh leadership and a new creative vision. Reuniting with Moore could potentially be what the franchise has been missing. While this may not attract the casual viewers as much as directors like JJ Abrams or Alex Kurtzman were expected to, it’s the hardcore fans that this move would resonate with – the core audience essential for the survival of the brand.

There’s a possibility that Moore might not be a choice Kurtzman is keen on for Star Trek, and likewise, Skydance and Paramount might prefer to continue with him. However, if Moore were to step in, it would certainly revitalize the excitement among fans, and more importantly, provide the buzz that Star Trek currently lacks.

It’s a long shot, for sure, but it’s a shot that could pay off.
