Jack White Opens His Debut Art Show in London

Summary

  • Jack White presents Thoughts May Disappear, his debut art exhibition, at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery
  • Running through September 13 in London, the show features new and archival installations, sculptures and design pieces, spotlighting White’s lesser known upholstery and sculptural practice

Before he became famous with The White Stripes or started his record label, Third Man Records, Jack White ran an upholstery shop. He opened it when he was only 21, and it was decorated in a striking color scheme of yellow, white, and black – a limited palette that would later become a signature part of his artistic style.

Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery in London is currently showcasing the work of White, a versatile artist. The exhibition, titled These Thoughts May Disappear, which runs until September 13th, is White’s first public art display. It includes a variety of both new and older sculptures made from found objects, plus interactive installations and furniture.

So, this artist usually keeps their work pretty under wraps, but they’ve got a six-room show going on now. It’s really interesting because it turns out they used to do upholstery, and that totally influences their style. They call it ‘Hardware Store Art’ – basically, they combine woodworking, fabric work, found objects, and taking old things and giving them new life. It’s a cool mix of everything!

Highlights of the show include a stunning outdoor space centered around the 30-foot-tall sculpture “The Red Tree,” complete with furniture inspired by mid-century modern design and the artistic legacy of Detroit’s Cass Corridor. The show culminated with six artists—including Ai Weiwei, Shepard Fairey, and Dustin Yellin—customizing the Fender Pano Verb amplifier, a model Jack White designed for Fender in 2024.

Jack White recently told Artnet that when people know you as a musician, they can be resistant to seeing you explore other creative outlets. He feels like some fans might not appreciate him branching out. He sees these different artistic pursuits as always having been a core part of who he is, and he’s now simply sharing more of his creative world with his audience.

These Thoughts May Disappear is now on view in London.
