Surprisingly, Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton Ranch Officially Replaces Kevin Costner’s John With Someone Better

Okay, fellow fans, if you’re watching Dutton Ranch, get ready – they’ve found someone to fill John Dutton’s shoes, and honestly, I think they’ve actually improved on the role! It’s been a while since Yellowstone finished, but Taylor Sheridan’s world is back, and it’s great to see. We started with Kayce’s story in Marshals, and now we’re diving into Beth and Rip’s lives in Texas with Dutton Ranch. It’s a fresh take that feels like a natural progression, and I’m really excited about where it’s going.

The newest show from Taylor Sheridan’s universe quickly moves past the happy life Beth and Rip had built in Montana after selling their ranch. Instead, the series focuses on their struggles and decision to remain in Texas, rather than return home to be near Kayce. This shift introduces a completely new setting and a cast of characters, some helpful and some dangerous. Among these new faces, Annette Bening’s character, Beulah Jackson, is particularly compelling.

Beulah Jackson Is Already A More Compelling Character Than John III (After Just Four Episodes Of Dutton Ranch)

Both Beulah from Dutton Ranch and John Dutton III from Yellowstone are powerful figures, defined by their positions and what they believe in. Like the late head of the Dutton family, Beulah fiercely protects her ranch and what she wants to leave behind, sometimes even more than her family. However, Dutton Ranch has quickly shown Beulah to be a complex character, developing her personality in just the first four episodes in a way Yellowstone hasn’t yet done with John Dutton.

Even with limited screen time, Dutton Ranch has already revealed many facets of the character – she’s been portrayed as a tough businesswoman, a controlling boss, a mother facing challenges, and recently, a woman dealing with heartbreak. Her conversation with Everett, which unveils their shared history, emphasizes her internal conflicts. Yellowstone didn’t explore John Dutton’s inner life as deeply, as Kevin Costner’s character was typically presented as calm and reserved. While his quiet strength made him a good leader, showing Beulah’s vulnerability immediately makes her a more compelling character.

How Beulah Poses The Biggest Threat To Beth & Rip’s Texas Life

From what we’ve seen, Beulah is willing to do almost anything to protect the reputation of 10 Petal. She and Beth clashed instantly, and that tension only grew throughout the show. While Beth and Rip are used to facing enemies, Beulah presents a unique threat because she has them at a disadvantage. Unlike previous conflicts on Yellowstone, where Beth and Rip had the advantage of being on their own land in Montana, here in Rio Palma they’re outsiders, and even the local police are under the Jacksons’ control.

Rather than directly opposing her, it would be wiser for them to handle Beulah more carefully. They likely can’t win in a direct confrontation, given her power and their current situation, especially with Carter developing feelings for Oreana. With Dutton Ranch proving so popular on Paramount+, a second season is almost guaranteed, so the writers need to ensure this complex relationship between the Duttons, Wheelers, and Beulah can continue to work for the story.
