Sydney Sweeney Fought To Keep R-Rated Scenes In Controversial HBO Series

Sydney Sweeney wasn’t backing down.

Sydney Sweeney has quickly become a well-known actress, starting with roles in popular series like The Handmaid’s Tale and Sharp Objects. She’s since starred in successful films such as The Housemaid and Anyone But You. Recently, Sweeney has been the subject of much public discussion, ranging from the roles she chooses to her personal life and political views.

Sam Levinson, the creator of the popular show Euphoria, recently discussed Sydney Sweeney’s role as Cassie Howard in the upcoming third and final season, including the challenging and explicit scenes she performs. In an interview with The New York Times, Levinson revealed details about his working relationship with Sweeney and how she felt about filming those intense scenes throughout the show’s final season.

It’s actually kind of humorous. When I initially wrote the script, I wondered if we could film everything without showing any nudity, maybe finding ways to avoid it. But the actress looked at me and asked if I was serious. She pointed out that she was playing the role of an OnlyFans model, and it didn’t make sense to avoid showing aspects of that. I realized she was right.

Throughout the series Euphoria, Cassie’s character went from wanting to be the ideal wife to Nate Jacobs (played by Jacob Elordi), but their relationship quickly faced problems. Like before, financial issues loomed over them, and Cassie started looking for ways to earn money independently. This included joining OnlyFans and sharing content that has since been criticized by many creators on the platform.

The creator of Euphoria highly praised Zendaya, calling her “completely fearless.” They explained that they share a strong level of trust and are exploring the world of OnlyFans in the show – a world where content creators are paid for intimate interactions. They described this as inherently absurd, but fun, and emphasized their commitment to portraying it authentically, with humor, drama, and a focus on the characters’ desires.

Levinson faced questions about the frequent nudity in the show, especially in the early seasons when the characters were depicted as high school students. He explained his reasoning by saying:

From the script, you get a sense of what the role requires.

When auditioning, like for a role such as Cassie, it’s important to be aware of any required nudity and ensure you’re comfortable with it. If an actor is okay with those requirements, they’re considered for the part. Then, an intimacy coordinator works with them. According to SAG rules, if an actor is cast and later decides they’re not comfortable with a nude or intimate scene, they can’t be forced to perform it.

For me, the most powerful acting comes from a place of freedom and safety. When an actor feels truly comfortable, that’s when the real magic happens. Any tension just blocks the emotion, and I learned that early on when I was studying the craft. So, what I focus on as a director is building an environment where actors can really explore the character and just play.

HBO and creator Sam Levinson have announced that season three of Euphoria will be the show’s last. While many fans are sad to see it end, they’re also glad it’s returning after a four-year break and despite recent issues surrounding the show. With stars like Sydney Sweeney becoming increasingly famous, it’s easy to see where the cast will be heading next.

Euphoria is available to stream on HBO.
