David Jason admits Del Boy legacy “upsets” him
As a gamer with a deep appreciation for British television, I can empathize with Sir David Jason‘s sentiments. Having grown up watching his diverse range of roles, from the quirky Grytpype-Thynne in Danger Mouse to the gritty Detective Inspector Frost, it’s disheartening to see him reduced to just Del Boy.
Sir David Jason has shared that it’s somewhat disheartening when individuals primarily recognize him due to his portrayal of Del Boy.
Throughout his distinguished acting journey, he has graced various productions ranging from “Open All Hours”, “A Touch of Frost”, “Danger Mouse”, “Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather”, and motoring documentaries. Yet, he shares that the general public primarily engage him about “Only Fools and Horses”.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast, I mentioned this intriguing experience I had, where it felt like some character from Derek Trotter’s world was sneaking up behind me, almost like Scrooge’s ghost in A Christmas Carol.
Perhaps a more fitting description would be “perpetually recognized” instead of “haunted”. While he is constantly with me, it’s not about being haunted; rather, it’s about the fact that wherever I go, people immediately recognize me as the character, and I am continually greeted with phrases like “Lovely jubbly!” and so on.
I’m often left feeling held back or just a bit annoyed, as it appears that the one thing people mainly recall about me is this specific aspect.
I’m really happy that my work on this character has touched so many people and brought them joy, but sometimes it feels like all anyone remembers is that role. It’s almost as though I’ve never done anything else in my career beyond playing Derek Trotter.
Reflecting on his overall career, the seasoned actor confessed that it wasn’t just the Del Boy character that brought him low points; instead, it was a missed opportunity or an undone task that weighed heaviest on him, not any regrettable action.
He shared that his deepest wish or sorrow, if you prefer… has been that he would become a player at the National Theatre all along. In other words, he’s expressed a lifelong desire to perform on the stage of the National Theatre.
Instead of my initial dream of performing alongside grand actors in large-scale productions, it never materialized. Now, I ponder if my past recollections might suffice, perhaps using a teleprompter to help me along.
