Christopher Nolan’s newest film is inspired by the classic story of The Odyssey and will arrive in theaters on July 17th. Many music lovers were surprised to see rapper Travis Scott featured in the movie’s trailer, leading people to wonder what his role would be.
Nolan explained to Time that the answer is simple: Scott’s character is a storyteller, and the story has been passed down through generations by word of mouth.
Nolan explained he chose the actor to suggest the story felt like it had been passed down through generations, similar to how rap music evolves through oral tradition.
The Odyssey director Christopher Nolan explains casting hip-hop icon Travis Scott
That’s a valid point. It’s hard to say why there’s resistance to including Travis Scott. It could be because of the tragic events at his 2021 Astroworld festival, where a lack of safety measures led to several deaths. People are understandably concerned about that, but it’s unclear how it relates to his involvement in a movie.
Scott doesn’t have a lot of acting experience, and while A$AP Rocky, who’s shown promise as an actor, could have also been a good fit for the part, that would have been a matter of preference. Ultimately, it’s Christopher Nolan’s job to ensure Scott delivers a strong performance and fits well within The Odyssey, and Nolan has a reputation as one of the best directors around.
His choice to include someone from the hip-hop world shouldn’t have been a point of debate. It was a tribute to the age-old practice of storytelling, which historically relied on oral traditions. That’s the power of rap – it’s a way of conveying narratives, much like filmmaking.
It’s important not to judge the movie’s success or failure based on Travis Scott’s involvement. He’s just one part of the film and isn’t the main focus.
This story centers on Odysseus’s challenging journey home after the Trojan War. It’s a classic tale, originally shared through spoken word, and now brought to life with an all-star cast. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway as his faithful wife, Penelope, Tom Holland as their son, Telemachus, and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, along with many other talented actors.
