Laura Dern Is Officially Joining ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4

Summary

  • HBO has officially cast Laura Dern in the upcoming fourth season of its hit anthology series
  • The casting shift follows Helena Bonham Carter’s unexpected departure shortly after filming began in France
  • Series creator Mike White is writing a completely original character for Dern rather than a direct replacement

HBO is making changes to the cast of The White Lotus for Season 4, and has officially added award-winning actress Laura Dern. According to Variety, this casting news comes after Helena Bonham Carter unexpectedly left the show, bringing a significant amount of star power to the next season.

Just days into filming in the South of France, a significant change happened with the show’s cast and story. HBO stated that the character originally planned for Helena Bonham Carter didn’t quite work once production began. Instead of finding someone to play the existing role, the show’s creator, Mike White, decided to rewrite parts of the script and create a completely new character designed specifically for Laura Dern. This is a welcome reunion for Dern and White, who previously worked together on the series Enlightened, and it gives Dern a larger role in The White Lotus after she made a brief, uncredited voice appearance in Season 2.

The next season of the show moves its sharp and funny look at society to the glamorous French Riviera, with the Cannes Film Festival playing a major role. Laura Dern joins a large and talented cast including Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Max Greenfield. Currently filming in luxurious locations like St. Tropez, Monaco, and Paris, the story will center on a fresh group of wealthy hotel guests and staff as they deal with the pressures of fame, their own egos, and public scandals over just one week.

Stay tuned for an official trailer and release date.
