JPEGMAFIA and Earl Sweatshirt are both major figures in alternative hip-hop, but despite their shared status, they don’t seem to get along at all.
The two recently had a public argument on Instagram, with both sides making critical comments. This isn’t the first time they’ve clashed, and given their current relationship, it likely won’t be the last.
The rivalry between these two skilled rappers has really escalated. Let’s break down how the feud between Peggy and Earl started and what sparked the recent back-and-forth on Instagram.
Here’s what led to JPEGMAFIA and Earl Sweatshirt going back and forth
The conflict started last year when JPEGMAFIA publicly criticized Earl Sweatshirt and producer The Alchemist in an interview with Billboard. This came after Earl and The Alchemist released their collaborative album, Voir Dire, in 2023. JPEGMAFIA felt they weren’t pushing themselves creatively.
Peggy expressed strong frustration, saying that many other artists, including Alchemist and Earl, have been creating very similar music for two decades, and she believes people aren’t interested in it anymore.
Earl didn’t immediately respond to this claim publicly, though fans thought he hinted at a response in his music. He didn’t address it directly until a recent online exchange, which started in the comments section of an interview with JPEGMAFIA that Pigeons & Planes shared on Instagram.
In a recent clip, JPEGMAFIA stirred up controversy while promoting his new album, EXPERIMENTAL RAP. He confidently stated he’s the leading artist in experimental rap and that others simply can’t match his skill.
He also seemed to criticize artists like Earl, saying that some rappers try too hard to imitate current trends. He explained, “Some people in this genre pretend they’re not into experimental rap and try to sound like artists like LUCKI, aiming for whatever’s popular with younger listeners. I don’t feel the need to do that.”
Earl responded to criticism online, posting comments like, “Nobody copies my music because it’s raw and unpolished,” and “Please just leave me alone, I enjoy making music with my friends.”
The situation worsened as JPEGMAFIA began to criticize Earl’s career, drawing comparisons to Joe Budden. He also mocked Earl’s slang, pointing out his boarding school background, and dismissed Earl and his friends as online personalities who were inadvertently promoting him.
Earl responded with sarcasm. He pretended to be enthusiastic about the new JPEGMAFIA album, calling it “really experimental,” and playfully teased Peggy about her outfit, saying he liked her “new leather vibe.”
That pretty much covers everything that’s happened with this online feud so far. Things have calmed down now, but it was really exciting to watch while it was happening.
This disagreement seems to stem from differences in each artist’s style and what they consider “experimental” music. While neither artist is widely popular, they approach music in very different ways. JPEGMAFIA’s style is typically chaotic and full of glitches, whereas Earl Sweatshirt is more relaxed and focuses on thoughtful lyrics.
Generally, acknowledging other artists shouldn’t cause negativity, but JPEGMAFIA feels differently. He believes his experimental approach is superior to that of rappers like Earl, and he’s been very vocal about it.
Currently, a lot of people seem to be supporting Earl in this dispute. It started when JPEGMAFIA publicly criticized Earl, and it appears JPEGMAFIA is willing to damage relationships and create conflict within the alternative hip-hop community.
Earl is now actively responding to Peggy’s statements, and it’s unfortunate things have come to this. Both artists have created excellent music, though in very different ways. While their styles differ, both are important and push boundaries within the rap world.
Fans are hoping Earl and Peggy can resolve their differences and find a way to work together. Just because they have different artistic styles doesn’t mean one is better than the other, and it’s possible for them both to succeed. Whether they’ll be able to see that remains to be seen.
