After four seasons on , the show has officially killed off its villain, Monica Stevens.
In the second-to-last episode of season 8, Monica (Bridget Regan) is fatally shot twice in the chest. Initially appearing to be a rideshare driver, her attacker is revealed to be a hired assassin. After trying to escape Los Angeles due to her involvement in criminal activity, Monica is taken to a secluded place. Her last request is to not be shot in the face, and thankfully, that wish is honored. The episode ends with a clear shot of her body, confirming her death.
Over the course of the show’s four seasons, Monica evolved from a lawyer who defended criminals to a criminal leader herself, even collaborating with the drug dealers and murderers she once represented in court. Despite repeatedly getting away with crimes – including attempted assassinations and a shockingly violent incident – some fans wondered why the show decided to eliminate her character this week. In a recent interview with TV Insider, showrunner Alexi Hawley explained the reasoning behind Monica’s death in season 8, episode 17.
It just felt like the right time to wrap up her storyline. She’d dealt with a lot, and I didn’t want the show to get stuck repeating itself. It felt like a natural conclusion, and we wanted to give her a strong, memorable send-off.
You know, before Monica tragically went, there was this really touching scene with her ex, Wesley – Shawn Ashmore played him. It was this final goodbye between them, super emotional and powerful, honestly. It really hit me hard.
Alexi Hawley praised the performances of two actors, noting their brilliance. He shared that he told Monica he’d give her a dramatic, Viking-style death scene, and they discussed layering complexity into her character while filming in Prague. He felt it would have been easy to portray her simply as a villain, but the show successfully revealed her vulnerabilities this season. He particularly highlighted a powerful scene where the character reflects on her actions, acknowledging her choices but still feeling lost about how her life unfolded, calling it a very emotional moment.
According to showrunner Alexi Hawley, that will be the last time viewers see the character Monica on The Rookie. He told TV Insider that the show doesn’t rely heavily on flashbacks, implying Monica’s story has concluded.
Regan told the publication she wasn’t shocked by Monica’s death, and even admitted to feeling “thrilled” about it.
I was impressed Monica lasted as long as she did, but it was inevitable she’d eventually face consequences for her dangerous lifestyle. I told Alexi and the others that she wasn’t just surviving on luck – she’d already escaped so many attempts on her life, including assassination and imprisonment, even being thrown into a wood chipper! What really surprised me, though, was how deeply saddened I felt. It wasn’t just that she died, but that she never managed to turn things around, that she ultimately gave in to her darker impulses and couldn’t find a path back to the light. I always believed there was a different future for her, but she couldn’t reach it, and that was the most heartbreaking part.
The Rookie’s season 8 finale airs Monday at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
