It’s still uncertain if RJ Decker will continue, but the show’s chances of being renewed have significantly improved thanks to a large increase in viewers on streaming platforms. It’s now officially among the most popular series in the U.S.
The TV show RJ Decker has seen a huge jump in popularity on Hulu, climbing from number 11 to number 2 in the U.S. rankings in just one day, according to FlixPatrol. It’s currently second only to The Testaments, a new series connected to The Handmaid’s Tale that launched on the platform last month. RJ Decker is also performing well in Canada, ranking at number 4 on Disney+. This surge in views likely comes after the show’s season finale, suggesting many viewers waited until the end of the season to watch all the episodes.
RJ Decker Needed This Win to Increase Season 2 Odds
The recent increase in viewers is positive news for RJ Decker, especially since the show’s future is uncertain and it could be canceled. It’s the only scripted series on ABC that hasn’t yet been renewed or canceled. Sources say the show has a 50/50 chance of being renewed, as it started with strong ratings on ABC but viewership declined as the season went on.
There’s also a chance that a new drama could lead to the cancellation of RJ Decker. ABC reportedly liked the pilot for The Rookie: North, a spin-off of The Rookie. The network will likely choose between the two shows for the 2026-27 season. While it’s possible both could be renewed, that would probably mean shortening the seasons of some existing ABC shows to stay within budget.
Will There Be a Second Season of RJ Decker?
Scott Speedman plays RJ Decker, a former newspaper photographer trying to rebuild his life as a private investigator in South Florida. After falling from grace, he takes on strange cases with an unlikely team: his ex-girlfriend Catherine (Adelaide Clemens), her wife Mel (Bevin Bru), and even the state senator, Emi (Jaina Lee Ortiz), who once put him in prison. The series, created by Robert Doherty, is adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s novel, Double Whammy.
According to Doherty, the show thrives on its self-contained, quirky cases. Looking ahead to Season 2, he’s excited to return to the strange and uniquely Floridian stories inspired by Carl Hiaasen. He notes that these types of episodes are a bit easier to create when the focus isn’t on intensely personal and high-stakes situations. The plan for the new season is to begin with a fun, bizarre, and distinctly Florida-based case, while also continuing to explore the consequences of the events that impacted RJ, Emi, and Victor at the end of Season 1.
