Aeon Flux Live-Action Series: Reviving Cyberpunk TV

Cyberpunk is currently very popular on TV. We’re seeing new shows based on classics like Blade Runner and William Gibson’s Neuromancer, and even the Cyberpunk video game itself has been adapted for television. While some recent cyberpunk series, such as Altered Carbon and The Peripheral, haven’t lasted long, others like Arcane and Terminator Zero have found success.

Considered one of the greatest cyberpunk shows of all time, Aeon Flux is a unique sci-fi adventure that originally aired in the early to mid-1990s. Set in a bleak, dystopian future inspired by German Expressionism, the series takes place after a global catastrophe has left only two city-states standing: Monica and Bregna. These cities, separated by a massive wall in a desolate landscape, are inhabited by clones, robots, and mutants. The show follows a skilled spy and dominatrix from Monica as she undertakes dangerous missions against the ruling forces of Bregna, often clashing with her complex rival and occasional lover.

Plans for a new live-action Aeon Flux series began in 2018 at MTV, with Jeff Davis (known for Teen Wolf) and Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) as executive producers. In 2021, the project moved to Paramount+ as part of a deal with Davis, who will also be the showrunner and director of the pilot episode. As of 2023, the series is still reportedly being developed.

Projects that stay in development for a very long time usually get cancelled. However, if a live-action Aeon Flux series ever actually happens and is good, it will have been worth the long delay.

A Live-Action Aeon Flux TV Show Would Be Cyberpunk Paradise

A live-action Aeon Flux series would be perfect for cyberpunk enthusiasts. It brings together everything fans love about the genre. Similar to Ghost in the Shell, it features a strong female lead operating in a vast, futuristic city. Like Arcane, the show explores a conflict between different societal levels, emphasizing the gap between the rich and the poor. And like The Matrix, its heroes are skilled, acrobatic martial artists who favor dark clothing.

This isn’t the first attempt to bring Aeon Flux to life with actors. A movie starring Charlize Theron came out in 2005, but it wasn’t a very accurate adaptation of the original series. It also missed the fast-paced energy that fans loved about the show. So, the new TV series from Paramount doesn’t have a high bar to clear to be better than the previous live-action version.

TV’s Recent Sci-Fi Success Stories Prove Now Is The Right Time For Aeon Flux

Science fiction is thriving on TV these days. While the future of Star Trek is a little unclear, shows like Severance and Pluribus are pushing the boundaries of the genre and gaining widespread popularity. We’re also seeing successful adaptations of other franchises, such as Alien: Earth bringing the Alien universe to television, and HBO’s The Last of Us adapting a beloved video game. Plus, many fans believe The Orville is currently a stronger Star Trekstyle show than anything officially branded as Star Trek*.

With recent sci-fi shows doing so well, now is a great time to revisit Aeon Flux as a live-action series. Viewers are clearly interested in the genre, and Aeon Flux‘s themes feel especially relevant today. If the actors are well-chosen, the story moves quickly, and the visual effects are strong, this new series has the potential to be a major hit.
