Netflix’s Popular Creature Feature Under Paris 2 Starts Filming

Netflix offers a vast library of movies and TV shows, including many original films alongside licensed content. Although not every original film is a critical success, quite a few become popular enough to warrant sequels, as we’ve seen with releases like one in 2024.

Shark movies have been a consistent draw for audiences for many years, but none have ever quite reached the impact of the 1975 classic, Jaws. Despite this, filmmakers continue to produce them. Following the release of a new shark film, Deep Water, and the success of Netflix’s Thrash, another long-awaited project is now moving forward. According to reports, Under Paris 2 has officially begun filming in France.

What Happens in Under Paris 2?

Set in the summer of 2024, the French film Under Paris is a shark thriller. When a large shark is discovered swimming in the Seine River, just as Paris is preparing to host the World Triathlon Championships for the first time, scientist Sophia and environmental activist Mika team up with Seine River police commander Adil. They must work together to prevent a disaster during the event and protect the city.

The first movie concluded with the genetically engineered sharks breeding in the Seine River. To eliminate them, a massive flood engulfs Paris, leaving the city overrun with sharks.

Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Guillaume Gouix, Phillippe Bas, Manon Bresch, and Anne Marivin are all back as cast members.

Three years after a disastrous triathlon flooded Paris, Sophia and Adil team up again for a dangerous mission. They must hunt down Lilith, the first of the predatory sharks now lurking in the Seine. But what they discover beneath the surface is far more shocking than they could have imagined.

Xavier Gens directed and co-wrote the first film. While he won’t be directing the sequel, he’s still contributing as a writer, along with Gregory Levasseur (known for Piranha 3D), Frédéric Garcia, William Laboury, and Fanny Talmone.

Aja explained that taking on the film was a natural fit, saying, ‘I’m a big fan of Paris, and I’ve always dreamed of directing a shark movie. When the chance to expand on the story came up, I couldn’t pass it up.’

Under Paris Was a Major Hit

The Netflix film Under Paris quickly became a huge hit with viewers, despite very little promotion beyond mentions of the 2024 Olympic Games. It’s now one of the platform’s most popular movies ever, racking up 102.3 million views in its first 91 days. This makes it the second most-watched non-English film on Netflix, just behind Troll, which has 103 million views.

The movie sparked a lot of disagreement among viewers. While critics gave it a slightly positive rating of 64%, earning it a “fresh” label, audiences weren’t impressed, giving it only a 30% approval rating and criticizing its unrealistic storyline.

Look, Netflix and shark movies go together like summer and beaches, and their latest, Thrash, is no exception. Critics absolutely slammed it, but honestly? Numbers don’t lie. It racked up a massive 37.7 million views and 54 million hours watched in its first week alone! It didn’t slow down after that either – another 34.5 million views and 49.5 million hours in week two, and still pulling in 9.6 million views and 13.8 million hours in week three. So, while it might not win any awards, people clearly wanted to see this shark flick.

Under Paris is streaming on Netflix. The sequel is likely to premiere in 2027.
