Rumors have been circulating that Warhorse Studios, known for the Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, is working on a new game based on The Lord of the Rings. However, the studio hasn’t confirmed or denied these reports. Tom Grey, the community manager, recently explained on Reddit that Warhorse Studios isn’t able to discuss its future projects at this time.
So, they’re keeping future games a secret, which is totally understandable – they said if I had a time machine, they’d love to see it! But the good news is, Ondrej Bittner, one of the directors, let slip that they’re working on a massive, really immersive RPG. I’m already hyped!
Bittner announced they’re developing a large, immersive role-playing game, but couldn’t share specifics just yet, stating they were ‘hard at work on… something’.
Rumors began circulating a few months ago about Warhorse Studios working on a game based on The Lord of the Rings. Ryszard Chojnowski, a long-time professional in the Polish gaming industry, claimed to have heard about the project from reliable sources. The reports also suggested that Embracer Group – the company that owns the rights to make games from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books – and a studio called Revenge were also participating. Given that Warhorse Studios is owned by PLAION, which itself is part of Embracer Group, this collaboration wouldn’t be unexpected.
Recent reports clarify that Warhorse Studios isn’t developing a Lord of the Rings RPG. Instead, Crystal Dynamics, known for Tomb Raider, is reportedly leading the project. Although there was some initial speculation about two different games using the same source material, sources familiar with the development have confirmed that Crystal Dynamics is the sole developer, according to gaming insider Mike Straw.
A new video game based on The Lord of the Rings is reportedly in the works, backed by $100 million from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. Although Embracer Group, the company involved, typically doesn’t discuss unconfirmed projects, early reports suggest the game will be a large, open-world experience similar to Hogwarts Legacy, offering fans a chance to explore the world of Middle-earth.
Warhorse Studios, known for its realistic and immersive medieval role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance, appears to be a great fit for developing a Lord of the Rings game. Their experience with detailed storytelling and large open worlds suggests the new game might focus on a specific region of Middle-earth, rather than the entire land.
Man, I was really hyped for that Lord of the Rings MMORPG Amazon was working on, but it got cancelled in October 2025. Apparently, Amazon decided to scale back their gaming efforts, which is a bummer. A lot of talented people lost their jobs because of it, including Ashleigh Amrine, who used to be a senior gameplay engineer on the project. It’s a real shame, I was looking forward to exploring Middle-earth with friends.
