Lauren Halsey Makes LA’s Hollywood Bowl Her “Funk Garden”

Summary

  • American artist Lauren Halsey will present her site-specific installation emajendat at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on September 29
  • The event will include immersive artworks, community activations and a concert to close it out

This fall, artist Lauren Halsey will reimagine Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, turning the 18,000-seat venue into a unique space called emajendat. On September 29th, the installation will feature large-scale artworks, events focused on the local community, and a concert with performances by Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, the Charles Gaines Collective, and Black Nile.

In 2024, emajendat premiered at the Serpentine Galleries, bringing the vibrant backyard culture of South Central Los Angeles to London. The installation featured realistic scenes of local heroes, colorful CD flooring, and a collection of figurines, sculptures, and what the artist calls “funkmounds.”

The presentation will likely feel like stepping into Halsey’s new sculpture park, which is filled with dreamlike imagery and celebrates Black culture, ancient Egypt, and LGBTQ+ heroes. Expect interactive experiences like airbrushing, mini golf, and a roller rink, alongside other community-focused activities.

The festival will culminate with performances by artists like Erykah Badu and Anderson .Paak (performing as DJ Pee .Wee), all set within a visually stunning, colorful environment designed with Halsey’s signature bold style.

Tickets for the emajendat concert will be available starting at 10 AM Pacific Time on May 5th at the Hollywood Bowl’s website. Visit the event page for complete information.
