Netflix’s Man on Fire is packed with unexpected twists and turns, building to an exciting climax that reveals the truth behind the bombing. While based on the A.J. Quinnell novels – also adapted into the 2004 Denzel Washington film of the same name – this version offers a fresh take on the classic revenge story.
John Creasy, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, isn’t hired to guard a child in this story. Instead, he’s sent to Rio de Janeiro before an election to prevent potential terrorist acts. Tragedy strikes when a bomb destroys the building where Creasy and his friend Rayburn are staying with Rayburn’s family. Creasy and Rayburn’s daughter, Poe, miraculously survive, but they soon find themselves facing even more danger.
Creasy is determined to shield Poe from danger and avenge the loss of his close friend. He gets assistance from Melo, his driver, and Melo’s connections within a favela gang. While investigating the bombing, Creasy uncovers a surprising and far-reaching conspiracy.
This results in a thrilling and emotionally resonant finale for Man on Fire, resolving the mystery of the bombing and leaving the door open for a possible continuation of the story.
Who Really Caused The Bombing & Their Downfall, Explained
Throughout Man on Fire, the series intentionally misleads viewers about who was responsible for the initial bombing. It’s eventually revealed that Henry Tappen, a former CIA agent, proposed the idea of a fake terrorist attack to President Carmo and Prado Soares just before the Brazilian election.
Winning a regular election wouldn’t have made a big difference, but a terrorist attack would have given them complete control of the government. Their plan was flawless, and it would have succeeded if Rayburn hadn’t hired Creasy to stop any attacks in Rio.
Creasy would have foiled their scheme, so the attackers switched their target to the building where Creasy and Rayburn were staying. They didn’t realize Creasy and Poe were out when the attack happened. This led to Creasy wrongly pursuing the wrong people for much of the story, as they had framed Ferraz. Creasy only discovers the truth when he confronts Ferraz.
In the Netflix show, Creasy defeats his enemies with a clever plan that allowed him to reach Tappen without triggering additional security. Knowing Tappen from their time working together, Creasy anticipates the deadman’s switch and uses it to expose Carmo and Soares, effectively ending their criminal activities.
How Creasy Clears His Name In Man On Fire
Tappen cleverly orchestrated both the setup of Ferraz for the bombing and the manipulation of communications between John Creasy and Ferraz, framing Creasy in the process. Consequently, he spends the majority of the final episodes in hiding, as his plan becomes much harder to carry out when he can’t be seen. He’s now focused on proving his innocence.
Creasy is deeply upset by the news reports that seem to connect Melo, Livro, Poe, and Vico to wrongdoing. He’s overwhelmed with guilt and believes he’s to blame for everything, falling into a cycle of shame.
He’s been carrying the weight of what happened in Mexico City, which triggered his PTSD. As a result, he distanced himself from everyone, even telling Rayburn he wanted to work alone. Despite his natural caution, he began to trust the four people he was working with and formed a bond with them around the middle of the Man on Fire series. However, the fear of putting those he cares about in danger continues to haunt him. He believes the only way to protect them – and himself – is to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy, even if it means exposing everything.
Fortunately, the deadman’s switch completely shifts the situation. The information revealed after Tappen’s death helps John Creasy both avenge the Rayburns and prove his innocence. He’s no longer a fugitive, and can finally start rebuilding his life. Plus, Creasy restores the CIA’s trust in him by stopping Tappen and protecting Poe.
Why Everyone Wants To Kill Poe, Explained
John Creasy is a highly skilled operative who could reveal a large-scale conspiracy, so it’s understandable why figures like Carmo and Soares would want to eliminate him – he poses a real danger. However, it’s puzzling why anyone would target Poe.
Poe is a young woman who doesn’t know how to defend herself, isn’t trained in questioning people, and has no connections to intelligence agencies – she’s not a danger to anyone. But Soares is very keen to learn what she knows and to get her safely out of the country. Looking back, this is the first hint that he might be involved in the crime himself.
Poe is the main person they need to stop because she witnessed the man on the motorcycle and could recognize Tappen. If Creasy killed Tappen, it would expose Carmo and Soares as the masterminds behind the bombing. Plus, Tappen is dangerous and would definitely reveal their involvement if identified. Poe is unaware of just how much trouble she’s in for uncovering this plot.
Why Tappen Became A Rogue CIA Agent
It seems strange that Tappen, a CIA agent, would betray the agency and aid President Carmo in seizing power as a dictator. He has no obvious connection to Brazil, no personal stake in the country’s leadership, and wouldn’t lose anything from a change in government. His reasons for helping Carmo are a mystery. However, the show’s plot eventually reveals that Tappen himself stands to gain from the situation.
He suggests Carmo and Soares leverage their new authority to negotiate agreements with the United States that would personally benefit Tappen. He aims to advance his career within the CIA and views this plan as the means to do so. This echoes a long pattern of U.S. intervention in foreign governments, as documented by historical records. However, unlike typical CIA operations, this is being driven by a single, unauthorized agent.
Why Ferraz Took The Fall For Tappen’s Crimes In The Netflix Show
When John Creasy goes to confront Ferraz, he discovers Ferraz wasn’t responsible for the bombing and had no connection to the FRP. It was actually Tappen, President Carmo, and Soares who orchestrated the entire event. They deliberately framed Ferraz, making it look like he was the one in charge, just as they previously framed John Creasy as a lone, rogue operative.
Okay, so the truth about Ferraz is he was the head of this criminal group, the FRP. But here’s the really messed up part: he didn’t actually order the bombing. He took the blame – completely sacrificed himself – because these other guys kidnapped his wife and children. He was trapped; if he talked, his family would be dead. It’s a horrible situation, but he was protecting them, not involved in the actual crime.
Ultimately, he sacrifices himself to protect his family and Creasy. He arranges for his family to be safely evacuated and then intentionally misleads his interrogators about Creasy’s whereabouts and their conversation, buying them time to escape.
This story highlights the fact that morality isn’t always black and white. While Ferraz may be connected to criminal activity, he isn’t completely ruthless. Unlike the perpetrators of the opening attack in Man on Fire, he and his organization, the FRP, haven’t engaged in large-scale terrorism.
He’ll even protect the man who tried to kill him, just to ensure his family’s safety. Like Creasy, he isn’t purely good or bad – they’re both complex characters operating in a morally ambiguous space, simply on different sides of the law.
How Man On Fire’s Ending Sets Up Season 2
In the final scene of Man on Fire, John Creasy and Poe reunite at the funeral for her family, finding comfort in each other like a small, makeshift family. Creasy keeps his earlier promise to be there for Poe, but their connection might be threatened if the story continues. He receives a job offer from a former colleague at the CIA, which could pull them apart.
Someone has information about the people who killed everyone in his squadron while they were in Mexico City, and they’ve asked Creasy to help bring them to justice. Even though he’d found some peace, the desire for revenge is overwhelming, and he requests they send him the details.
The show’s future isn’t certain, but director Steven Caple Jr. told ComicBook.com they are currently working under the assumption it will continue. If a second season of Man on Fire happens, the main character, Creasy, will likely be forced to say goodbye to the people he’s come to see as family.
In the next season of Man on Fire, Creasy may be compelled to confront the traumatic event that originally caused his PTSD. Still healing from his experiences in Mexico City and Rio, he’ll likely battle to stay mentally stable while trying to move past a painful chapter of his life.
