Barry Keoghan says the intense online harassment he experienced after being falsely accused of cheating on Sabrina Carpenter caused him to withdraw from public life.

In 2023, after gaining widespread recognition for his lead role in Emerald Fennell’s film Saltburn, the Irish actor briefly dated Carpenter.

He faced backlash from Carpenter’s fans after a rumor spread on the gossip site DeuxMoi, suggesting he had been unfaithful with TikTok star Breckie Hill. He has strongly denied the allegations.

Barry Keoghan shared on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast that years of hurtful comments, often about his appearance, have made him hesitant to go out in public.

He explained that he’s been withdrawing from things and hasn’t been seeing friends lately. He clarified this is due to false rumors about infidelity.

‘I never confirmed or said anything about it, and, you know, I just disappeared.’ 

He explained that he prefers to keep relationships private, but acknowledged that when a relationship becomes public, it inevitably receives a lot of attention and gets widely discussed.

A girl posted a video, and then followed it up with another one apologizing for the first, but it didn’t get much attention.

I saw this video from Hailey, and she was addressing all the rumors about her and Justin. She was really clear that she hadn’t cheated and that she’d actually never even met the actor people were talking about. It was a pretty direct response, honestly.

Barry Keoghan experienced a difficult childhood marked by addiction, tragically losing his mother, Debbie, to a heroin overdose when he was just 12 years old.

He stated he was now free from drugs, but shared a painful history: his mother died at 32 from heroin use, and his father had also passed away. Despite this, he admitted to still occasionally feeling tempted to use drugs.

He explained that he avoids alcohol completely. He used to try to moderate his drinking, hoping for periods of sobriety, but now believes he’s essentially ‘allergic’ to alcohol, as his response to it is to use cocaine – a habit that could be fatal.
