Iconic and beloved comedy-drama Monarch of the Glen to return in ‘reimagined’ new series

The popular early 2000s drama Monarch of the Glen is getting a reboot with a new take on the original story. The show, which aired 64 episodes over seven seasons on BBC One from 2000 to 2005, will now be shown on a different network.

Channel 5 is creating a new six-episode series with a fresh main character. Production is scheduled to begin later this year.

The series, formerly led by Alastair Mackenzie, is set on a beautiful estate in the Scottish Highlands and explores the relationships and stories of the people who live and work there.

Isla Campbell, a successful London lawyer, returns to her family’s rundown estate in the Scottish Highlands for her father’s funeral, expecting a short visit. However, she soon learns she’s inherited a massive debt, the bank is threatening to foreclose, and her brother is determined to hold onto their family home – leaving Isla with a lot more than just grief to deal with.

After years apart, a brother and sister reunite and must work together to save their family estate from financial ruin before it’s lost forever.

The new series introduces a compelling cast of characters and is brought to life by creator Jeremy Brock, who also wrote and executive produced it. He shared his enthusiasm for revisiting ‘Monarch of the Glen,’ explaining he’s eager to explore themes of family, belonging, and navigating modern life. The story aims to capture the heart and quirks of a unique community with both honesty and a hopeful spirit.

With so much uncertainty in the world, finding places that inspire hope and happiness is more important than ever. The Scottish Highlands, known for their breathtaking beauty, seemed like the perfect place to nurture those feelings.

Okay, so the first Monarch of the Glen series had some really familiar faces! I recognized Ewan Mackenzie, of course, but it also starred Dawn Steele, Susan Hampshire, Lloyd Owen, and the great Richard Briers. And get this – Tom Baker, who was Doctor Who for ages, and Julian Fellowes, the guy who created Downton Abbey, both had parts too! It was a pretty star-studded cast, honestly.

Casting details for this new reimagining are yet to be revealed, as are release dates.

You’ll soon be able to watch Monarch of the Glen on Channel 5. Right now, you can stream the original series on BBC iPlayer.
