Production Officially Begins on Lionsgate’s ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off ‘Caine’ With Donnie Yen

Summary

  • Lionsgate has officially commenced production on the latest expansion of the John Wick universe centered around the blind assassin Caine
  • Donnie Yen steps into a dual role for the film by starring and making his English-language directorial debut
  • The standalone project will also see Rina Sawayama return as Akira to continue the cliffhanger established in the franchise’s fourth chapter

Lionsgate has started filming Caine, a new movie set in the John Wick universe. This spin-off will tell its own unique story within the popular action franchise.

This new film is a big moment for martial arts star Donnie Yen, as he directs in English for the first time, also producing and playing the lead role. He collaborated with writers Mattson Tomlin and Robert Askins, allowing him to fully realize his vision for the movie and build on the story of his character. Rina Sawayama will be back as Akira, picking up right where the last John Wick: Chapter 4 scene left off, continuing her quest for revenge for her father’s death.

Caine initially appeared as a hesitant villain, compelled by the High Table to pursue a former friend, but quickly became a memorable character in the John Wick world. His return is central to the expanding universe, which now includes the prequel series The Continental and the upcoming film Ballerina. By revisiting the unresolved conflict between Caine and Akira, the filmmakers are building a richer, more emotionally engaging story within this action-packed universe.

Although there’s no confirmed release date yet, Caine is currently slated for release in 2027. Keep an eye out for the official trailer!
