The first images from Bill Nighy’s upcoming film, A Town in Nova Scotia, have been revealed, signaling a major milestone for the project as it nears release.
The movie centers on Nighy’s character, Leon, a recent widower who lives by himself. His daughter, Anna, lives far away in Canada.
She invited him to Nova Scotia, but when he learned about a fire in a London tower block, he chose to focus on improving the safety of their own aging building. He teamed up with Saleh, a neighbor and fellow single resident, to launch this effort.

The film, praised as a heartwarming story about friendship, determination, and quiet rebellion, is finishing up production. Paradise City will present it at the Cannes Film Festival (May 12-23) in hopes of securing a distribution deal.
The initial image features Sir Ben Kingsley’s character, Leon, and Makram J. Khoury’s Saleh riding a carousel. Kingsley has a subtle, amused expression.

The film features excellent performances by Bill Nighy and Makram J Khoury, making it both enjoyable for general audiences and promising for film festivals. Director Babak Jalali’s unique style and understated humor are key to its appeal.

Director Jalali explained that A Town in Nova Scotia explores themes of community, friendship, and making choices about how to live out one’s later years and with whom.
I’m so happy to be collaborating with Paradise City Sales once more. I had a fantastic experience working with everyone on my last movie, Fremont, and I can’t imagine a more supportive, driven, and genuinely nice group to help bring this new film to audiences.
The movie’s story is quite similar to the 2022 film Living, where Bill Nighy plays a man who, after learning some upsetting news, decides to improve things in his town.
Bill Nighy received an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film, and you can currently watch it for free on Channel 4, though it won’t be available there indefinitely.
A Town in Nova Scotia does not currently have a release date.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! This special 100-page, full-color magazine celebrates the life and work of Sir David Attenborough. You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
