Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from season 1, episode 8 of Maul – Shadow Lord. While Anakin Skywalker is famous as a tragic character in Star Wars, many fans now consider another villain to be even more heartbreaking. Anakin’s story – starting as a hero, then falling due to his weaknesses and losing everything – has long been the standard for tragic villains. However, recent developments suggest another character now embodies that tragedy even more powerfully.
Anakin Skywalker is undeniably the central tragic figure in the entire Star Wars saga. He’s the focus of the prequel films, the primary villain in the original trilogy, and was prophesied to restore balance to the Force. His story carries a powerful emotional impact, and no other Star Wars character is as relatable, multifaceted, and ultimately as heartbreaking. By today’s standards, Anakin’s fall from grace is a truly tragic tale.
When we think of truly tragic characters, Darth Maul actually embodies that idea more strongly than Anakin Skywalker. Classic Greek tragedies, like the story of Sisyphus, were heartbreaking because the characters were destined to lose. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t overcome their flaws or change what was going to happen. In that same way, Maul, rather than Anakin, has become the tragic villain of the Star Wars saga.
Maul Has Become A Much More Tragic Villain Than Anakin In Recent Years
Freddie Prinze Jr., who voiced Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars Rebels, made a great point: Darth Maul is essentially a tragic figure, much like those found in ancient Greek plays. The character’s entire arc revolves around constant failure. He was initially promoted by Darth Sidious in The Phantom Menace, but ultimately defeated and nearly destroyed by Obi-Wan Kenobi in their famous duel.
Darth Maul experienced a resurgence in The Clone Wars, gaining a brother in Savage Opress, regaining his legs, and essentially a second chance at life. He even formed the Shadow Collective and successfully conquered Mandalore. However, Ahsoka Tano and the events of Order 66 destroyed everything he’d built. By the time he appears in Rebels, Maul is left with nothing and is driven to search the galaxy for a Sith holocron.
The rebels left Maul with nothing, ultimately taking his life. Just when it seemed he had lost everything, he was defeated again—this time by Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was a sad and unremarkable end, a final lightsaber fight with the one person Maul hated most in the galaxy. For years, Star Wars has worked to portray Maul as a deeply tragic figure.
Darth Maul’s story in Star Wars is arguably even more heartbreaking than Anakin Skywalker’s. While Anakin found redemption in Return of the Jedi, ultimately saving his son and destroying the Emperor before dying peacefully, Maul never had that chance. He never overcame his fate or found a moment of triumph, making his story a particularly tragic one.
Maul didn’t find any comfort in his final moments. He died alone in the cold desert, in the arms of his enemy, after seeing all his life’s work crumble. He truly lost everything – his position as a Sith, his brother, and his criminal organization. From beginning to end, Maul’s life was filled with sadness, failure, and ultimately, a grim end. Unlike Anakin, who experienced happiness with Padmé, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Luke, Maul knew only hatred and pain.
Maul – Shadow Lord Will Cement Maul’s Tragic Status
Maul’s story is still unfolding, and it’s incredibly tragic. The Maul – Shadow Lord series further solidifies him as perhaps the most heartbreaking character in Star Wars, especially knowing how his story ultimately ends. Currently, in episode 8 of Shadow Lord, Maul is regaining power, attempting to train a new apprentice, Devon Izara, and experiencing a resurgence. This is all building up to his role in Rebels, and it’s a deliberate way for Star Wars to make his eventual downfall even more impactful.
It’s a little sad to think about, but when we first see Maul in Rebels, he’s basically a broken man, wandering the galaxy all alone and stripped of his power. Knowing that Maul – Shadow Lord happens years before that, it means everything he’s building in the show – all that power he’s gathering, the Shadow Collective, and even his control over Crimson Dawn – will eventually be lost. It’s going to be tough to watch him fall from where he is now, knowing where he ends up!

Darth Maul’s potential defeat in Shadow Lord could be his most crushing yet. Unlike his previous losses, which allowed for resurrection, rebuilding, or even a peaceful acceptance of death, this one feels different. After being defeated in The Phantom Menace, he was brought back. In The Clone Wars, he could start anew with the Shadow Collective. And even in Rebels, his death had a certain closure, with Obi-Wan offering a hint of hope for Luke Skywalker. This upcoming defeat, however, promises to be final and without any of those mitigating factors.
Maul’s loss in Shadow Lord leaves him with no hope for a better future. After the Shadow Collective falls apart once more, he’s destined to wander alone, rejected by Sidious and the Sith. With Savage Opress gone and Rook Kast and his Dathomiri allies either dead or missing, Maul will be completely isolated. By the end of Maul – Shadow Lord, all that awaits him is suffering, bitterness, and ultimately, death at the hands of the enemy he despises most.
