According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third season of the Prime Video series will arrive in 2026, earlier than many fans anticipated. While details about the new season are scarce beyond the actors and a general outline of the story, there’s good reason to believe it will be well-received. The show’s second season was a significant step up from the first, with audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes increasing by 20%.
With the show now halfway through its planned five seasons, hopefully the positive momentum will continue. To ensure the next season of The Rings of Power does well, it should tackle some of the most debated parts of the story. One key issue is a change made to Galadriel’s backstory, which could be resolved by bringing in a character often sidelined in The Lord of the Rings: Celeborn, who eventually becomes the Lord of Lothlórien.
The Rings of Power Wrote Off Galadriel’s Husband
The episode “The Eye” revealed that Galadriel’s husband, Celeborn, had been missing for a long time and was thought to be dead. Many fans suspect he’s still alive, because his death wouldn’t fit with the story told in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, which The Rings of Power is designed to lead into. However, his disappearance allowed the show to develop other potential love interests for Galadriel.
During the first season, Galadriel appeared to fall in love with Halbrand, who was secretly Sauron in disguise. Director Charlotte Brändström confirmed to Nerdist that Galadriel was “obviously in love” with him. This continued into the second season, even as he helped her escape from being held captive.
Many fans of Tolkien’s work were bothered by storylines where characters moved on quickly after losing a spouse. The only exception to this in all of Tolkien’s writings was King Finwë, who had a unique situation. The upcoming third season of The Rings of Power is expected to reintroduce Celeborn and establish him as Galadriel’s true love, fixing this inconsistency with the original stories.
Celeborn Was Important to Middle-earth’s History
Including Celeborn in the story isn’t just about satisfying fans; it could also open up possibilities for future storylines. In Tolkien’s writings, Celeborn and Galadriel had a daughter named Celebrían, who later married Elrond. According to Tolkien’s established history, Celebrían was born well before the Rings of Power were created and the realm of Eregion was destroyed. However, this event hasn’t happened yet within the timeline of The Rings of Power, as it would be odd if Galadriel had a daughter who wasn’t mentioned during the first two seasons.
Bringing Celeborn back would also help Galadriel grow as a character. Throughout The Rings of Power, she’s been shaped by loss – not only the loss of Celeborn, but other painful experiences as well. This grief fueled her intense and often reckless pursuit of Sauron. Finding her husband again would allow Galadriel to begin healing from her past, and continue her journey towards becoming the calm and wise figure we see in The Lord of the Rings.
So far, The Rings of Power has been cleverly playing with what viewers expect, based on their knowledge of Tolkien’s books or Peter Jackson’s movies. But the show can’t rely on this trick forever. By the end of season three, the series will be over halfway finished, meaning it needs to start establishing the foundations for the Middle-earth fans are familiar with. One important step would be resolving Galadriel’s romantic storyline, setting her and Celeborn up for their future roles as rulers.
