Laura Dern will appear in the fourth season of HBO’s The White Lotus after Helena Bonham Carter exited the show. This reunites Dern with the series creator, Mike White, who she previously worked with on the show Enlightened.
Helena Bonham Carter was confirmed to join the cast back in January, and filming for the new season started earlier this month.
The actress left the show shortly after production began. A spokesperson for HBO stated that the character created for Helena Bonham Carter didn’t fit with the direction the show was taking once filming started.
The part is being reimagined, with the script revised and a new actor being sought. HBO, the show’s creators, and Mike are disappointed they won’t be collaborating with her on this project, but they remain huge fans and hope to find another opportunity to work with her in the future.
According to Deadline Dern will play a new character, which White has developed and written for her.

Dern previously made a brief, uncredited voice appearance in season two of The White Lotus, playing Abby, the soon-to-be ex-wife of Dominic Di Grasso (Michael Imperioli).
