Goldie Hawn has been in a relationship with Kurt Russell for over 40 years.
The Academy Award-winning actress recently shared with People magazine the secret to keeping the spark alive in her relationship, while also discussing her new children’s book, ‘The After-School Kindness Crew: Pooch on the Loose #1’.
Kurt Russell’s recent success with Taylor Sheridan’s series, ‘The Madison,’ has drawn attention to his long-term relationship with Goldie Hawn. The show, where he plays a devoted husband to Michelle Pfeiffer, was a major hit this spring, prompting renewed interest in his real-life connection with Hawn.
The famous actress shared that she enjoys the independence her relationship with the star of Escape From New York allows her.
‘When I say freedom, it means liberation, I don’t feel penned in,’ began the mother to Kate Hudson.
We often had different opinions, and that was okay. We were both very impulsive people. Our relationship was built on a foundation of positivity and shared experiences.
They began dating in 1983 while working on the movie Swing Shift, which came out in 1984.
When asked about their 43-year relationship, she explained to the magazine that finding the right partner is key. She also noted that relationships can become more challenging with age.
Goldie Hawn, known for her role in ‘Snatched,’ focuses on maintaining a positive outlook. She emphasizes the importance of perspective, saying, “What you think about and how you appreciate life’s moments directly impacts your brain.” Hawn’s personal mantra is, “Everything is amazing right now.”
In January she said though she and Russell have never married, they continue to thrive.
In an interview with The Dan Buettner Podcast, she revealed she feels a strong sexual attraction to him, describing it as an important part of a healthy, long-term relationship. She went on to say she views him as a sexual partner.
The Butterflies Are Free actress also said: ‘I find him incredibly handsome to this day.’
And she looked up to the actor: ‘I have respect for him because I think he’s an amazing person.’
He’s also wonderful with our kids, which is a huge plus. They all adore him, and we truly are a very happy family – almost always! We really feel like a unit, and honestly, I wouldn’t want anyone who pretends to be perfect. Because nobody is!
And she stays with him because of the sense of freedom.
Goldie Hawn explained her approach to relationships by saying she identifies with birds. She believes that if given space, she might choose to stay, but if someone tries to control her, she’ll likely shed her true self and rebel.
The actress explained that knowing she has the option to leave a relationship is what keeps her connected to Russell. She described it as the freedom to maintain her individuality, especially when they already agree on important things, and to have the space to be herself.
The marriage question gets asked a lot, she said.
The actress, known for her role in Foul Play, pointed out that even if they were to get married now, it wouldn’t change things after 42 years.
In 2015 Hawn shared more secrets.
She told Porter magazine that lasting love isn’t about getting married, but about making a conscious effort and truly intending to make the relationship work.
According to the longtime Hollywood Squares panelist, a strong, enduring relationship isn’t defined by marriage, but by how well partners get along and talk to each other.
For a relationship to succeed, both people need to be committed to making it work. If one person isn’t willing to try, it’s unlikely to succeed. Shared intention is the most important factor.
It’s also important to maintain your individuality within a relationship. A strong partnership is like two supporting pillars – together you create a stable foundation, but you don’t need to be identical. Learning to navigate disagreements and accept differences is key, because ultimately, everything comes down to the choices you make.
She also said caring about family is important.
Kurt grew up with three sisters in a close-knit family, and I had one sister and loving parents in a large family. That’s what’s most important to us, she explained.
From the beginning, we focused on building a strong connection and finding shared interests. While we both worked and relied on childcare, we made sure to be actively involved in our children’s lives, just like we were raised. I grew up with a mother who was always there, while Kurt’s experience was different.
The couple first met in 1968 while working on the set of Walt Disney’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. However, they didn’t begin a romantic relationship until 1983, while filming the movie Swing Shift – a full fifteen years later.
Three years before this, Goldie Hawn had divorced Bill Hudson, and they shared two children together, Kate and Oliver. Simultaneously, Kurt Russell was also going through a divorce from actress Season Hubley.
Oh my gosh, it’s just so fascinating! So, Kurt Russell basically stepped into Kate and Oliver’s life as their stepdad, and then Goldie Hawn became a stepmom to Boston, Kurt’s son from a previous relationship with Season Hubley. And then, then they had their own little miracle, Wyatt, born in 1986! It’s just the sweetest, most perfect blended family ever, honestly. I’ve followed their story for years!
