Sara Cox thanks her friends for ‘picking me up and dusting me down’ as she celebrates taking over Radio 2 Breakfast Show from pal Scott Mills

Sara Cox expressed her gratitude to her friends for supporting her after a difficult time, as she celebrated starting her new job at Radio 2.

The 51-year-old DJ has taken over from Scott Mills as the BBC’s Eurovision host and celebrated with her friends, enjoying sparkling cider instead of alcohol.

She posted an Instagram update on Tuesday, showing herself smiling during a lunch outing with friends.

Sara shared a post announcing she was celebrating before a show with sparkling cider and her two best friends.

You’ve always been my biggest supporter, celebrating my wins and helping me through tough times. Thank you for so many years of friendship, love, encouragement, and laughter!

I was absolutely floored when I heard she was taking over hosting Eurovision! It’s just… unexpected, considering everything. Poor Scott Mills was supposed to do it, but then those awful allegations came out last month – really serious stuff about a teenage boy – and suddenly she’s stepping in. Honestly, it’s a lot to process, but I’m still so excited for her!

As a long-time follower, I was shocked to read in the Daily Mirror that the firing of Mills seems to be connected to a police investigation from 2016. Apparently, this investigation looked into very serious allegations – sexual offences against a teenager that allegedly happened between 1997 and 2000. It’s a really disturbing connection, and I’m hoping more details will come to light.

The case was dropped around seven years ago due to a lack of evidence.

Scott, age 53, has been let go by the BBC after 28 years, reportedly because of allegations concerning a past relationship.

The BBC announced it has cancelled all upcoming projects with the presenter, including their planned coverage of the competition in May.

Since 2011, Scott has been a regular commentator for Eurovision’s semi-finals, broadcast on BBC One the week before the grand finale.

He’s recently been working with Rylan Clark on the shows, and also hosted live coverage of the Eurovision final on BBC Radio 2.

Sara will be taking over the role, having previously commentated on the semi-finals during a radio broadcast last year with former commentator Rylan.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will culminate in a grand final in Vienna, Austria, on May 16th. The semi-finals will be held on May 12th and 14th.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen so many beautiful workplace friendships blossom, and Scott and Sara’s was definitely one of them. He recently went above and beyond to support her fundraising efforts for Children In Need, and shared such a heartfelt and lovely message about her – it was truly touching to see!

Last November, he shared a photo with Sara and wrote, ‘WHAT. A. HERO. So proud of @djsaracox!’

The Daily Mail reported that the person accusing Scott of sexual offenses allegedly occurred when he was under the age of 16.

Police questioned Mills, who was 24 years old at the time the accusations surfaced, under caution in 2018.

Detectives at Scotland Yard investigated a man in his 40s, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided there wasn’t enough evidence to pursue the case. The investigation was closed in 2019.

The Daily Mail suggests the person who complained may have been prompted to come forward again because of the recent Huw Edwards documentary.

Sources inside the BBC suggest the individual in question may have approached the corporation because of the extensive media attention surrounding Martin Clunes’s role in the documentary ‘Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards’.

I was really shocked to hear that Mills was let go just six days after his last show on Radio 2. It happened so quickly – he was taken off the air during his final breakfast show last Tuesday, the very same day the Channel 5 program came out. It all felt very sudden and a bit unfair, honestly.

Last month, rumors surfaced that Sara was a potential replacement for Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly as a host on Strictly Come Dancing.

Oh my gosh, I heard from someone who’s on the inside that everyone loves Sara! Apparently, the viewers totally trust her, and the people in charge think she’s absolutely perfect for the show. Like, a natural fit! I knew it all along, she’s amazing!

Listeners of Sara’s show on Radio 2 are familiar with her quick wit and natural conversational style. She’s also well-known as a dedicated and reliable professional.

‘Execs have mentioned her name as someone who would be a good fit for the job.’

Last November, Sara’s Great Northern Marathon Challenge successfully raised an impressive £11.5 million for Children In Need.

She walked an incredible 135 miles over five days, crossing four counties – Northumberland, County Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire. That’s like completing five marathons!

Watching Sara finish was incredible! She was so emotional, and when she finally spoke, she immediately thanked Chase & Status and Stormzy for a track called ‘Backbone’. It was clearly a song that really got her through it all, and it was touching to see her acknowledge that right after such a huge accomplishment.

Oh my gosh, I feel terrible! I have to apologize to my son because, if that documentary actually stays on TV, he’s going to see me singing… a lot. And honestly? It’s just so embarrassing to watch myself! I’m cringing just thinking about it!

I feel terrible that my kids had to listen to me! We were listening to Radio 2, and I got really into it, singing along enthusiastically to songs by Blur and others, just trying to get through a tough time.
