BBC marks National BSL Day with groundbreaking new series – marking a meaningful first

To mark National BSL Day on Tuesday, April 28th, the BBC is debuting its innovative new CBeebies show, Tiny Tunes.

Tiny Tunes is a groundbreaking show for BBC’s CBeebies, being the first to include deaf children and adults on screen. The BBC says the program aims to provide positive representation for deaf children and encourage all young viewers to be more accepting of others.

Kate Morton, a senior leader at CBeebies, explained that “Tiny Tunes” is a significant program for both CBeebies and the deaf community. It’s the first time the channel has featured deaf children in its content, which is crucial for representation. Seeing themselves on screen is important for deaf children, and it helps all young viewers develop a more inclusive worldview.

We’re delighted to launch this on National British Sign Language Day, just before Deaf Awareness Week, because it shows how important accessibility and inclusion are to us at CBeebies.

Presented by Lisa Kelly, Tiny Tunes is a Flashing Lights Media production with Camilla Arnold as executive producer.

This new series builds on the success of the BBC’s critically acclaimed show, Reunion, which aired in 2025. That BAFTA-winning thriller, told from the perspective of the deaf community and featuring both British Sign Language and spoken English, followed the difficult story of Daniel Brennan, a former prisoner played by Matthew Gurney.

After being released from prison, Daniel finds himself rejected by the deaf community and is determined to both make amends for his past and get revenge on those he feels wronged him. The show won a BAFTA TV Craft Award for its cast, and Rose Ayling-Ellis has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming BAFTA awards in May.

Lara Peake, Anne-Marie Duff, and Eddie Marsan also star in the series alongside Rose Gurney and Maisie Ayling-Ellis. We gave the show five stars, highlighting the exceptional cast and how they enhanced the beautiful story. We also noted that Reunion is a testament to its creator, William Mager, and his personal experience as a deaf individual, which is evident throughout the series.

After watching all four episodes, the show’s powerful message – ‘No one to sign my name’ – will stay with you long after it ends, profoundly impacting your perspective.

You can now watch Tiny Tunes and Reunion on BBC iPlayer and CBeebies. Tiny Tunes became available starting Monday, May 4th.
