I’m so excited! Andy Muschietti, the director of It: Welcome to Derry, just gave us a big update on season two. It’s going to be set in 1962, which is 27 years before the first movie! So we’ll see what happened before the kids from season one started looking for their missing friend.
I’m so excited for the next season! Andy Muschietti, who’s directing and overseeing everything, just let us know which point in the story they’re going to focus on. It’s great to finally have some clarity on the timeline!
At a recent TV panel hosted by Deadline, director Andy Muschietti revealed that the storyline for season two was based on a side plot from Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT.

Muschietti said they were enjoying working on the project in 1935, and then shared some details about the story.
If you’ve read the books, you probably know about the Bradley Gang. They were a group of bank robbers, and they weren’t just passing through Derry by chance. They stopped to get some ammunition, and that’s when something truly awful happened. It’s a really chilling part of the story!
What to Read Next
Director Muschietti explained that the fictional Bradley Gang in the story was inspired by the real-life Brady Gang, a group of robbers who were killed by authorities in Bangor, Maine, during the 1930s.
We’re not aiming for the peak of violence in this situation to be a mass killing of the Bradley gang.
So, Muschietti told me season two is going to be a huge shift! It’s set during the Great Depression, and he says everything about how the show works is going to be totally different. I’m really curious to see what that means!
He explained that this was back in 1935, and things were really tough. People were extremely poor and just trying to get by, so the circumstances were quite different then.
The showrunner revealed plans for season three, describing a major event: the destruction of the Kitchener Iron Works. This would happen during an Easter egg hunt, resulting in the tragic loss of around one hundred children. He emphasized this event has always been a looming threat within the show’s narrative.

The first season was well-received by both viewers and critics, earning an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 164 reviews.
According to The Evening Standard, the series is remarkably well-made, even though it features intensely disturbing and graphic content – it’s a new peak for the body horror genre.
According to The Age, the new, expensive series looks fantastic, boasts a talented cast, and is suitably unsettling.
IT: Welcome to Derry airs on HBO Max.
