Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 7-8
Seeing cool lightsaber duels and dark side abilities is always fun, but Maul – Shadow Lord really stands out. It reveals surprising new layers to Maul’s character – sides of him I didn’t expect to see explored with so much detail. In fact, the latest episodes of Shadow Lord just achieved something completely new for the Star Wars universe.
In episode 7 of Maul – Shadow Lord, the Imperial Inquisitor Marrok teams up with Crow to track down Maul and the two Jedi who escaped with him on the planet Janix. After a fierce fight with the Inquisitors that damages his robotic leg, Maul triggers a cave-in, sending him deep underground. Episode 8 of Shadow Lord shows Maul trying to reconnect with his troops, but he’s overwhelmed by a powerful, Force-induced vision, leading to surprisingly emotional reactions from the former Sith Lord.
In short, Shadow Lord just gave us a surprisingly relatable and humanizing moment with Darth Maul. This scene will likely change how many fans see the Star Wars villain from now on.
Shadow Lord Episode 8 Features Maul Crying For The First Time In Star Wars History
Isolated from his army, Maul has a powerful vision connected to the dark side of the Force. This vision makes him confront painful memories from his past, including the moment he was separated from his brother, Savage, as a child to be trained by Darth Sidious – a scene audiences have never witnessed before.
The vision really hit me with all the pivotal, traumatic moments of Maul’s life. I saw glimpses of the brutal training he endured under Sidious, the devastating duel with Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace where he lost his legs, and then the years of insane wandering he went through before Savage Opress found him during the Clone Wars. It was heartbreaking to also witness Savage’s death at the hands of Sidious, especially considering it happened right as Maul was starting to gain control of Mandalore. It really painted a picture of how much suffering this character has been through.
This scene is incredibly powerful, but what really stands out is how it begins. We first see Maul confronting a reflection of his younger self, and he expresses hatred towards it, as if he’s angry about his own past vulnerabilities and mistakes.
These experiences only fuel Maul’s hatred for Darth Sidious, the source of all his pain and the target of his revenge. The vision ends with Maul looking at his younger self, vowing to prevent Sidious from harming anyone else – a promise made while a single tear rolls down his cheek.
It’s incredibly rare to see Maul let his guard down like this. While unexpected, it feels earned given everything he’s endured – and that’s saying something, as the vision only showed a fraction of his pain. This is a first for the character within the official Star Wars story, and it adds significant depth, truly emphasizing the tragedy of his fall to the dark side.
27 Years Later, Darth Maul Has Become One Of Star Wars’ Greatest Legacy Characters
Darth Maul immediately captured fans’ attention when he appeared in The Phantom Menace in 1999, thanks to his striking look, unique double-bladed lightsaber, and skilled fighting style. Considering he began as a relatively simple character who seemingly died early on, the incredible depth and development he’s received over the last three decades is a remarkable achievement in storytelling.
Shows like Clone Wars, Rebels, and now Shadow Lord, along with the Son of Dathomir comics, have given fans a much deeper understanding of Maul than ever before. But it’s moments like seeing Maul break down and cry in Shadow Lord that really show how much his character has developed. Even with two episodes left in this season and a whole second season planned, Shadow Lord has already established Maul as one of the most compelling villains in the Star Wars universe – and arguably one of the greatest characters ever.
The last two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will be available to stream starting May 4th, also known as Star Wars Day.
