Jordan Peele’s New Horror Movie Is A Netflix Hit In The US After $28M Disappointment

Jordan Peele’s latest horror film got off to a slow start in theaters, but it’s now become a hit on Netflix.

Jordan Peele first gained fame as one half of the comedy duo behind the Emmy-winning series Key & Peele (2012–2015). He then made a striking entrance into the horror genre in 2017 with his first film as director, Get Out, which was a critical and commercial success. He won an Academy Award for the film’s original screenplay, quickly becoming known as a visionary filmmaker. He continued to create unique horror films with Us (2019) and Nope (2022). Through his production company, Monkeypaw Productions, Peele also produces other horror projects, including Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman (2018), Candyman (2021), and the upcoming Him (2025)—one of which has become a popular hit on Netflix.

Seven months after hitting cinemas, the film Him is now a popular choice on Netflix. Directed by Justin Tipping in his first feature film, and co-written with Skip Bronkie and Zack Akers, this horror movie centers on a talented young football player who gets the chance to train with a famous quarterback. What starts as a mentoring opportunity quickly turns into something much darker and more disturbing.

As of today, April 27th, the movie Him is the fifth most popular film on Netflix in the United States. It was released in theaters in September 2025. Currently, Apex is at number one, followed by Roommates, Untold: The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill, and Thrash. Him is ahead of films like 180, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, KPop Demon Hunters, and Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which is at number ten.

The movie’s cast features Marlon Wayans, along with Tyriq Withers (known from Atlanta and the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer and Reminders of Him), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Maurice Greene, Indira G. Wilson, Gerone McKinley, Heather Lynn Harris, Don Benjamin, Guapdad 4000, Richard Lippert, Naomi Grossman, Tierra Whack, Chase Garland, Norman Towns, and GiGi Erneta.

Okay, so I checked out Him, and honestly, it really disappointed me. Critics weren’t impressed either – it only has a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. Everyone agrees it looks good, with a cool style, but the movie just doesn’t deliver on its interesting idea. It starts strong, but quickly falls apart and loses its way way before the ending. It felt like a real missed opportunity.

The 2025 horror film received mixed reactions from viewers, earning a 56% approval rating. While praised for its creative concepts and strong visuals, many found the story didn’t quite come together. Despite exploring interesting and symbolic themes, the movie ultimately fell short of being truly satisfying.

The movie wasn’t successful in theaters, earning only $28 million globally despite costing $27 million to make. However, it’s now starting to find an audience on Netflix.
