Foo Fighters take the Saturday Night Live UK stage with two new songs – Review

For three decades, the Foo Fighters have consistently delivered enjoyable music. They started with a distinct, polished sound – catchy choruses and clear instrumentation – and have maintained that quality ever since. Dave Grohl’s leadership is clearly a key to their success.

While the band has always been energetic, some of their albums have explored more thoughtful themes. Instead of the loud, driving sound of “Monkey Wrench,” they created the more subdued “The Glass.” Both songs were excellent, but they conveyed a different kind of emotional intensity.

The band’s new album, Your Favorite Toy, has a sound that reminds listeners of 1990s music. It’s a bit rougher and more raw than their previous work – as much as the Foo Fighters can achieve that – but it’s still a good album. They even performed two songs from it on Saturday Night Live UK this weekend.

“Caught in the Echo”

It was great to see Pat Smear perform, especially since he recently broke his foot and could have easily missed the show.

The song immediately establishes its energy with Dave Grohl repeatedly shouting “Do I?” – a style reminiscent of the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want.” It starts with a strong, driving force reflecting Grohl’s initial approach, but then deliberately shifts to a slower pace.

The song starts strong, slows down for a moment, then quickly builds to an energetic finish. For most of its length, it’s a thrilling, fast, and loud experience. Similarly, Dave Grohl brings an incredibly energetic and lively presence to the SNL stage – it’s just how the Foo Fighters operate, and it’s very effective.

“Child Actor”

I’m really getting a Britpop vibe from this song, especially the chorus – it honestly sounds like something Ocean Colour Scene could have written! But what really gets me are the verses. They’ve got this beautiful, slightly sad quality that just elevates the whole track and makes it way more moving than I expected.

This isn’t meant to be critical at all. It’s just that this part is a little surprising, but in a good way.

The song features a recurring line, “turn the cameras off,” which seems to reference the intense public scrutiny Dave Grohl faced due to personal issues recently. While the song is generally excellent, this line is repeated too often and feels somewhat unnatural.
