Gerard Butler’s latest thriller, Greenland: Migration, has become surprisingly popular after its unexpected release on streaming services last week. The film bypassed cinemas in the UK and wasn’t promoted beforehand, appearing on Prime Video out of nowhere on Friday.
Even though it didn’t have a big launch, the film has become very popular. It’s currently the number one movie on Prime Video UK and the second most-watched show or movie overall in the UK right now.
Surprisingly, the movie wasn’t successful in the countries where it was actually shown. Despite costing around $90 million to make, it only earned $44.8 million in ticket sales.

This number is surprisingly lower than the $52.3 million earned by the first movie in 2020. That film came out during the pandemic, when many theaters were closed or had limited capacity.
The first movie concluded with a devastating comet impact that wiped out almost all of humanity and civilization. However, John Garrity, played by Butler, and his family were able to reach a safe bunker before it happened.

The sequel picks up five years later, when a natural disaster causes the destruction of the bunker.
After returning to the surface, the family searches for a new, safe place to live, but they face the terrifying challenges of a drastically changed world. Will they be able to survive?

Morena Baccarin, known for her roles in Firefly and the Deadpool movies, returned for this film. Roman Griffin Davis, who starred in Jojo Rabbit and Silent Night, took over the role previously played by Roger Dale Floyd. Ric Roman Waugh directed the movie, continuing his work from previous installments.
Like most Gerard Butler movies, audiences seem to be enjoying it more than critics are.
Rotten Tomatoes reports a generally positive audience response to the film, with 66% of over 1,000 users giving it a positive rating. However, critics are less enthusiastic, with only 49% of 100 reviews being positive.
ComingSoon highlighted that critics generally liked the film, describing it as a skillfully made and frequently captivating sequel. They noted it successfully captures the spirit of the first movie, though it doesn’t quite achieve the same level of impact.
