The White Lotus gets big season 4 update as British star exits mid-filming with role “rewritten”

Just as filming began in France for the fourth season of The White Lotus, Helena Bonham Carter has exited the show.

The actress, known for winning a BAFTA for her role in The King’s Speech, was originally announced as part of the cast back in January. However, it’s now been confirmed she will no longer be appearing in Mike White’s comedy-drama.

According to a statement from HBO published by Deadline, issues arose during the start of filming for season four of The White Lotus. The character originally written for Helena Bonham Carter simply didn’t work out when they began shooting.

The part is being reimagined and rewritten, and a new actor will be cast soon. HBO, the show’s creators, and Mike are disappointed they won’t be able to work with her this time, but they’re still big fans and hope to collaborate with her on something else in the future.

In January, Carter joined the cast including Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Chris Messina, and Marissa Long. Alexander Ludwig and AJ Michalka had been announced as cast members the month before.

The show has also welcomed many other talented actors, including Sandra Bernhard, Ari Graynor, Dylan Ennis, Vincent Cassel, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, and Heather Graham.

Filming has begun in France – specifically in St. Tropez, Monaco, and Paris – just as the project is getting underway. The story unfolds during the Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera and offers a fresh take on a familiar plot.

The first three seasons of the show were mainly set at a single resort in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand. But the upcoming fourth season will be different – the story will unfold across two different hotels for the first time.

Okay, so I just read the scoop on Season 4 of The White Lotus! Basically, it’s going to follow a whole new set of guests and staff at the hotel, and the action unfolds over a week during the Cannes Film Festival. Sounds wild, right? I’m already hyped to see what kind of drama goes down.

The White Lotus airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK and streams on HBO Max.
