Michael Sheen and Callum Scott Howells are teaming up again for a new stage version of Amadeus, the thrilling historical play about the intense competition between composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This isn’t the first time these two actors have worked together – they previously appeared in the 2024 BBC drama, The Way. Sheen, who also co-created and directed that series, will take on the role of Salieri in this new production. Howells, known for his part in It’s a Sin, will play Mozart.
A new production of Peter Shaffer’s play, originally written in 1979, will debut at New Theatre Cardiff on March 9, 2027, and run until March 27th. Following this, it will transfer to the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End for a 16-week engagement, starting April 17th.

Sheen expressed his excitement about returning to the West End to perform in Amadeus. He said it felt particularly meaningful to play Salieri alongside another actor from Wales as Mozart, a role he’s always cherished.
The actor, famous for his roles in Good Omens and The Queen, praised his fellow cast member as incredibly talented and encouraged viewers to look forward to the upcoming show, calling it important and fresh.

Howells expressed their excitement about performing Mozart in next year’s production, calling it a dream come true. They’ve wanted the role for years and are thrilled to offer a fresh interpretation of this classic story.
Jeremy Herrin is directing the newest version of the play, praising Michael Sheen as a truly gifted performer. He also highlighted the immense talent and captivating stage presence of Steffan Howells, and described Shaffer’s work as a classic.
The story begins in Vienna in 1820. A well-known composer reveals a surprising truth: Antonio Salieri believes he’s achieved his position and success through hard work. But everything changes when he encounters the incredibly talented young musician, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Mozart’s music is often simple and playful, yet incredibly masterful. Salieri recognizes a talent so exceptional, he’s convinced it must be a gift from God—and that God made a mistake in choosing Mozart as the recipient.
Overwhelmed by Mozart’s incredible talent, Salieri becomes dangerously fixated, launching a secret plan to ruin the man he simultaneously admires and hates.

Amadeus is a captivating film powered by incredible music. It tells the story of a fierce rivalry fueled by ambition, faith, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of greatness – a battle between talent and brilliance where loyalty crumbles and one man pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, even challenging the divine.
Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed play has been successfully adapted for the screen twice before. A 1984 film version famously won eight Oscars, including the award for Best Picture, and a television series based on the play aired on Sky last year.
The play Amadeus will debut at New Theatre Cardiff on March 9, 2027, and then move to the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End on April 17, 2027.
