Scooby-Doo Star Matthew Lillard Confirms Shaggy Return

Netflix is creating a new live-action series that will show how the Scooby-Doo gang, Mystery Inc., first came together. And Matthew Lillard, who famously played Shaggy for many years, has hinted that he’s not finished with the role yet.

Damian Lillard is well-known for playing Shaggy Rogers in live-action Scooby-Doo films. After Casey Kasem retired in 2009, Lillard began voicing the animated version of Shaggy in numerous projects. He recently revealed in an interview with the Phase Hero podcast that he’ll be returning to voice Shaggy in a new animated series.

A New Scooby-Doo Cartoon Is About to Start Production

Lillard mentioned they were close to launching something, but quickly thought better of officially announcing it. He hinted, “I probably shouldn’t say this, but there’s a possibility of a new animated series coming soon, possibly.”

Though Matthew Lillard is now the most frequent voice of Shaggy in Scooby-Doo animations, the filmmakers haven’t always stuck with him. For example, Will Forte voiced Shaggy in the 2020 film Scoob!, which made Lillard worry he might lose the role permanently. In a recent interview, Lillard told host Brandon Davis that he believes it’s generally better to use experienced voice actors instead of simply casting famous actors who lack that background.

According to Matthew Lillard, Grey DeLisle, the voice of Daphne in Scooby-Doo, and Frank Welker, who voices Fred, Scooby-Doo, and the monsters, are both incredibly talented voice actors. Lillard believes it’s a mistake for Hollywood to rely solely on a celebrity’s voice to carry a film, as voice acting requires a very particular skill set.

He explained that in Hollywood animated movies, it’s a mistake to cast an actor whose voice isn’t strong enough to convey the film’s emotions.

Tanner Hagen Is the Next Live-Action Shaggy

Tanner Hagen will play Shaggy in the upcoming live-action Netflix movie, Scooby-Doo: Origins. He’ll be joined by Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, Maxwell Jenkins as Fred, and Mckenna Grace as Daphne. Matthew Lillard has expressed interest in being involved, but hasn’t officially signed on. It’s currently unknown who will voice Scooby-Doo, or whether the character will be a CGI creation or a real dog. Production has just begun, and a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
