What Lainey Wilson did after the wind briefly shut down Stagecoach

Lainey Wilson didn‘t appear concerned when strong winds briefly stopped the show at Stagecoach on Saturday night.

After a one-hour delay that forced festival-goers to briefly evacuate the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Wilson took the main stage and joked to the crowd about the unexpected break: “I hope you all were enjoying some tequila in your cars!”

The whoops across the field suggested that might’ve been what happened.

Wilson recently became only the third woman in five years to headline the Stagecoach festival. Her performance highlighted the energetic, guitar-driven country-rock that has made her a major star in Nashville, a success she’s built over the past ten years, even while living in a camper trailer.

Songs like “Can’t Sit Still” and “Wildflowers and Wild Horses” had a confident, Rolling Stones-like energy, while “Country’s Cool Again” blended a funky, country feel. To create a grand performance – the stage was designed to resemble a shimmering desert oasis with cacti – Wilson added a horn section and backup singers, transforming “Dreamcatcher” into a vibrant and soulful psychedelic experience.

Early in the show, Kelsea Ballerini brought out Little Big Town and Riley Green for a really fun, casual performance of Merle Haggard’s “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” – they even had drinks in plastic cups! I was so glad she let Riley stick around and play his song, “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” since his scheduled set had to be canceled because of the wind. Sadly, Journey’s performance on the Mustang stage was also called off.

Wilson had just one other guest join her on stage: a young girl she introduced as “cowgirl of the night” during the song “Things a Man Oughta Know.” She then performed her most beloved song, “Somewhere Over Laredo,” followed by a particularly sensual rendition of “Watermelon Moonshine,” a nostalgic love song from 2023 that many consider to be her best work.
