Box Office Blues: Mufasa and One of Them Days Struggle on MLK Weekend
Keke Palmer and Sza have taken the top spots at the box office, however, the success they’ve achieved might not be the recognition they initially anticipated.
In an unremarkable four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, their latest comedy, titled “One of Them Days,” opened at the peak position in the box office.
The story of two close friends living together, struggling to prevent eviction following an unfortunate incident involving their shared rent, has been highly praised by critics with a nearly perfect 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, it has also earned a favorable 92% approval from the audience.
On the East Coast, cold weather and chaos caused by the Los Angeles fires could potentially explain why this past MLK holiday weekend saw one of the lowest numbers of visitors in a decade.
One of Them Days earned an estimated $11.4 million.
1. In the case of Mufasa, The Lion King was narrowly beaten; its computer-animated prequel managed to earn an impressive $11.5 million at the box office. (Or)
2. As for Mufasa, The Lion King lost by a hair’s breadth; its computer-animated prequel pulled off a surprising victory with a $11.5 million ticket sale haul.
3. Speaking of Mufasa, The Lion King came in second place; the computer-animated prequel, to Disney’s delight, just barely edged it out with a box office take of $11.5 million.
The film has garnered significant popularity not only within the U.S., but also worldwide, amassing approximately $592 million in global box office revenues.
Debuting in third place was the fright flick Wolf Man.
In the main plot, Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott star as a family forced to take shelter in an isolated farmstead when their moving truck encounters a mysterious beast. As the story unfolds, the father undergoes ominous transformations.
The suspenseful film was met with unfavorable opinions by both critics and audiences, leading to a relatively average opening weekend with earnings of approximately $10.55 million at the box office.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remained engaging for viewers, securing a position at number four. This blend of real-life and animated action gathered an impressive $8.6 million in earnings.
Previously number one at the box office, Den of Thieves 2: Panthera experienced a significant drop, ending up in fifth position last week.
The globally released action-thriller featuring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. earned a box office revenue of merely $6.6 million.
Moana 2 left the top five for the first time since its debut.
The animated adventure dropped its anchor in sixth place with a catch worth $6.068 million.
The sexy, spooky Nosferatu took a bite out of the box office landing in seventh place.
The gothic tale about love and obsession collected $4.3 million.
The Bob Dylan biographical movie, “A Complete Unknown,” moved down two positions and ended up at the 8th spot, earning $3.8 million.
Audience members and film critics have commended Timothée Chalamet’s acting as the renowned musician who transitioned from folk to rock music, however, so far, there hasn’t been significant curiosity among viewers to delve deeper into the life story of Dylan.
Over the past four weeks, the movie A Complete Unknown hasn’t managed to recoup its $70 million production cost. It has only generated $58.3 million domestically and an additional $39,503 overseas, bringing its total box office earnings to approximately $58.4 million.
Although Wicked continues to enchant audiences in theaters, it seems that with the option of purchasing or renting the movie online for streaming, people are less eager to see it on the big screen.
Over the weekend, the highly successful musical featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande garnered a healthy box office take of approximately $3.55 million. This blockbuster production has already grossed over $709 million globally.
Nicole Kidman’s steamy performance in Babygirl landed the film in 10th place.
The erotic thriller took in approximately $2.01 million during the weekend, and since it premiered on December 27, it’s amassed a total of roughly $31.1 million across global markets.
On the weekend box office, an estimated total of $68.53 million was earned, with approximately $30 million more anticipated for Monday’s earnings. The last time such a low box office revenue was reported was back in January 2022.
Despite some negative aspects, there was also good news. According to ComScore’s report, the combined U.S./Canada box office for the first 19 days of 2025 saw an 8% rise compared to the same period in 2024, as stated by Deadline.
