On the one-year mark since the passing of Roy Battersby, Kate Beckinsale posted a heartfelt tribute in remembrance.

In December 2023, her stepfather, Roy, was admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles following a severe stroke. He had been fighting two types of cancer since being diagnosed in the summer.

He then sadly passed away a month later aged 87.

In the candid Instagram post, Kate revealed she’ll forever be ‘haunted’ after seeing Roy die.

Next to a radiant photo of Roy, Kate wrote: ‘Discovering my father’s lifeless body all by myself in the middle of the night when I was just five years old had an immense impact on my life. The memory of losing my cherished stepfather a year ago today will stay with me for eternity.’

It feels incredibly unfortunate that I was there for both incidents and couldn’t stop either from happening, even though I did everything possible the second time around. Regrettably, it wasn’t sufficient.

As a devoted follower, I’d recount my heartrending journey of losing Roy, which inadvertently cost me family ties, friendships, moments of personal wellbeing, and every penny I had saved. This was the harsh reality of an unforgiving American healthcare system that overlooks those without insurance coverage. Despite the hardships, I stand firm in my decision – I would endure it all once more, without hesitation.

I can’t help but feel deeply disappointed by my performance – yet today, I’m attempting to find solace in the extensive preparation he undertook throughout his latter years as a Jungian scholar, his intense focus on study and practice. Moreover, the thin line between the energy of this world and what lies beyond gives me some comfort, knowing that perhaps a part of him found peace with it.

It seems as though I’m deceiving myself when I attempt to find comfort, but maybe it’s because I haven’t yet reached a level of understanding that can override feelings of sorrow, remorse, and regret.

She added that although it is a ‘tough day’ to talk about the tragedy, she wants to ‘honour him’.

He showed me the way to be courageous. He demonstrated that it’s unimportant if people don’t appreciate you, as long as you’re doing what’s right. He sacrificed all he had while advocating for justice for labor unions and the Palestinians in the ’70s, residing among them in refugee camps in Lebanon for multiple years to create his 1977 documentary ‘The Palestinian’. He battled tirelessly for miners, losing everything during strikes.

Roy assisted my Jewish grandmother, whom I adopted and who had to flee Germany at age 14, in a heartfelt effort to discover the fate of her long-lost brother and parents who didn’t survive.

He faced a ban from the BBC, as well as other organizations. If he had simply followed the rules and not prioritized principles over convenience, his professional path would have taken a significantly different course.

She concluded with these words: ‘I feel incredibly fortunate to have been brought up by someone who unequivocally understood right from wrong and embodied it. They also showed me love. Thank you for being my dad. I deeply yearn for your presence.’

When Roy passed away, the actress posted a black square with no caption on her Instagram, and her friends and admirers expressed their sympathies in the comment section.

Previously, it was known that the British actress had been quietly providing care for her cherished mother and stepfather, who were facing numerous severe health problems. (DailyMail.com)

In 1997, Kate’s mother, actress Judy Loe, wed Roy, an event that took place 18 years following the demise of Kate’s father, Richard Beckinsale, who was famously known for his role in Porridge.

Roy had a thriving career as a director, contributing to popular British television shows such as Inspector Morse and Cracker. More recently, he directed an episode of A Touch Of Frost in 2006.

Kate wrote on her Instagram post, “I’m still at a loss for words,” followed by gratitude towards a fan for enhancing the video. “Oh Roy, I truly apologize for my defeat.

The video began with an emotional playback of Roy reminiscing about his experience of having to seek refuge in a shelter during the initial phase of World War II, when Nazi aircraft dropped their relentless barrage of bombs, known as the Blitz.

As a dedicated follower, I found the proclamation of V-E Day a truly marvelous moment. It signified an end to the dreadful days spent huddled in shelters, and it meant that young men no longer had to bid farewell to their families, embarking on perilous journeys to fight battles across the continent.

In addition to the main content, the video showcased numerous charming snapshots of Kate with her stepfather and mother. One of these images was particularly amusing, displaying Kate and Roy grinning at one another, each holding a teacup with a playful insult written on it.

On Sunday, January 7th, Kate hastened from the Golden Globe Awards to a hospital, posting pictures from the red carpet and next to Roy’s bed, titling them: “Golden Globes 2024 – From Beginning to End.

Despite visiting the hospital, she remained dressed in her elegant Atelier Zuhra dress. In between bites of a burger, she conversed with friends and relatives gathered around Roy.

Her companions and admirers swiftly reached out to the celebrity, with one expressing: “I can’t imagine how you got through last night considering everything that was happening. You’re incredibly resilient and a true professional.

‘Leaving Roy by your side for this obligation was more than expected, but it had to be done. Wishing you and your family all the love and prayers during this time. I’m overjoyed that you were able to return to the hospital. ❤️’

Kate replied: “Thanks a bunch, and thanks again for your encouraging messages throughout. That really meant a lot xx
